*Cough UCD in the InterToto starting it all Cough*

It'll be interesting in the next couple of years to see whether summer football or professional (unaffordable) football was the bigger factor in the improved results.

In 2000-01 Bohs beat Aberdeen before running Kaiserslautern close in the UEFA Cup, Shels beat Sloga Jugomagnat of Macedonia in the Champions League. In 01-02 Bohs beat Levadia Maardu in the Champions League.

but without doubt the move to summer football has pushed it on to another level.
Running Kaiserslautern close is probably pushing it - but yeah results were improving for sure.

3-2in parkhead and 0-0 in Oriel....terrible results! Beating Linfield at the time was no mean feat considering they were in front after Oriel leg

City got as far as Armenia.

Pats' upcoming game in Russia may be even further than that.

I think seand in post #12 tries to bring together different ways to measure the acheivements of the clubs.
As cup competitions, I think reaching the latter stages is far more convincing then wins and draws in the qualifying rounds, before bigger countries and Nations are even in the tournament.

I've liked Waterford and Dundalk FC's reslts in the seventies.

Not really. We lost 3-2 on agg and had a perfectly good goal ruled offside in the second leg.

The European Cup was just champions and as far as I know, an open draw. Imagine beating Hibernians of Malta and Linfield brought you to the round before the quarters!

and that they way it should be,
the likes of arsenal and liverpool didnt win a league for yonks and still enter the european cup every year,
while champions of the eircom league and most other small country leagues have to win about 6 games before they are even noticed.

uefa = a load of bullcrap.

Back in the day, the UEFA cup was actually a far stronger competition

i use to love the UEFA cup and the cup winners cup.
all the smaller leagues in europe got a fairer chance and made a nice few bob out of it aswell.
but these days its only the big money clubs who are getting all the cream while smaller league clubs are falling apart and going bust.

    shame really
