    Ireland v England

    The Legends

    Jacks Boys are Back

It can exclusively be announced today that the Legends are returning to Tolka Park, Dublin. In a match that will relive international footballing history, Ireland and England Legends will play once again on Irish soil on Wednesday 26th August 2009 KO 7.30pm.

This will be the first match Ireland and England have played since the infamous match at Lansdowne Road in 1995. Many of the players that were on the squads that night will be lining out for their Legends teams at Tolka Park on 26th August, and are determined to put the past behind them and make it a fun and family friendly game.

Famously known as ‘Jacks boys’; John Aldridge, Ray Houghton, Paul McGrath and Ronnie Whelan are just some of the names that fans can expect to see. Ronnie, who made his debut for the Republic of Ireland in 1981 before he began playing for Liverpool FC, made 53 appearances for his country between 1981 and 1995. The Ireland Legends have recruited some younger legs to give them an advantage, Ian Harte who has won 64 international caps and scored 11 goals, and Gary Kelly who made 51 international appearances for the Republic of Ireland. Kelly is well known for playing his entire professional career at Leeds United FC, making a total of 531 appearances for the club.

Ireland Legend John Aldridge commented, “It was always very special for me to play for Ireland, especially under Jack Charlton. There is always a great competitive spirit when playing with the Legends, especially playing against England, we never wanted to lose to them back then and we still don’t now.”

The England Legends have confirmed their secret weapon Andy Cole will give them the competitive edge over the Ireland Legends, as the second highest goal scorer in Premier League history Cole scored 187 goals in his professional career. He is one of the few players in England to have swept all possible honours in the English game, winning 15 caps for England between 1995 and 2001. Paul Parker, Gary Pallister, Chris Waddle and Lee Sharpe have also been confirmed to.......

You can call it "Legends" or "Masters" or any other overhyped term, but I can never understand why any football fan would want to hand over hard cash to provide beer money for a bunch of fat has-beens and never-was'es shuffling around after a ball for an hour and a bit - all for the benefit of some greasy promoter with an eye for the main chance.

Far better just to donate a couple of quid to the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Appeal (or somesuch) and settle back on the settee with a couple of beers to watch a DVD of eg Italia 90, when those same players were in their prime.

P.S. This is not an attack on the ROI (or England) team. I'd say exactly the same if it were eg the NI 1982 WC team against Spain.

P.P.S. I do slightly resent their appropriation of the name "Ireland", though.

Different folks, different strokes. Personally I enjoy watching the vets. You would probably be better off giving all your money to charity than to any football club, DVD producer or Diageo PLC for booze, but that's neither her nor there.

I'm sure Paul McGrath would appreciate your description of him as a "fat has-beens and never-was" but I appreciate watching the ball skills these guys, Ireland's best, never lose.

I'm sure he would, you could justly call him a lot worse...
A leading authority on League of Ireland football since 2003. You're probably wrong.

While Paul McGrath has had his problems off the field he is beyond reproach as a footballer - no-one will be calling him anything but GOD in Tolka Park next week. Even, if he can't do it now, just seeing him will bring back nothing but happy memories.

Absolutely, and, anyone who has met him will know that he's a pure gentleman. A legend of IRELAND in all respects.
