Actually rather a terse response there. I think Stephen Alkin may have been reading the forum. RTE should have shown the game last night, but whatever reasons they may have to justify not showing it, the shoddy way the "report" was thrown together last night on the news was unforgiveable.
'It is true that RTE will not be showing the Bohemians game. That is because our champions league coverage commences with the 3rd qualifying round'.
That's fantastic. Our national broadcaster joins the competition just at the stage when Irish clubs are not likely to be involved anymore. We live in the strangest and maddest country in the world.
It is true that RTE will not be showing the Bohemians game. That is because our champions league coverage commences with the 3rd qualifying round.
ya when the english and scottish teams can be shown.
Are Celtic in the 3rd qualifying round this year? I'm blissfully ignorant of whether or not 2 Scottish teams get in this season. Hopefully they are, Bohs go through, and are scheduled to play on the same night as Celtic. Then we'll see the true face of RTÉ.
DCFC
They would be contractually obliged to, and also to act as host broadcaster for any Irish team that qualified for the CL proper. Stephen Alkin explained that to me once, and it was obvious he considered it a heart-breaking imposition.
A leading authority on League of Ireland football since 2003. You're probably wrong.
Celtic have to qualify AFAIK.
Amazes me though that so many LOI are so bitter against Celtic. They are far from the cause of LOI problems.
ps. RTE are more likely even to show Glasgow Rangers games than LOI! they just have it SO wrong. There is great interest even among non LOI regulars in any Irish team in Europe.
Look I have no care for Celtic and wouldn't begrudge an Irish person supporting them, its their free choice, its the patriotic idiots who think supporting Celtic is supporting an 'Irish' team. You will see these goons with Irish flags with Celtic crests on them.
And nah Glasgow Rangers definetly wouldn't be shown by RTE over a LOI team, Celtic would be though if it was possible.
If Setanta Ireland were in better shape, they probably wouldve showed last nights game and next tues night as well.
To Mr Alkin or whoever from RTE is reading this:
As somebody who is paying your salary i request you make an adjustment to your budget drop 1 week of "The Premiership" and instead show Bohs 2nd leg in the C.L Live.
Yours Sincerely,
E.B.
I'm listening to drive-time sport on radio1, so I'm going to ping Des Cahill an email to see if he has the guts to address this shambles on air. But I doubt his Fat GAA disposition will be up to it.
Pen
I think RTÉ have the exclusive rights to all Champions League games (including qualifiers) though, meaning only they could have broadcast it live in Ireland. To show it, I'm guessing that Setanta would have had to have purchased rights to show all games. That's my understanding anyway. Maybe I'm incorrect ...
Edit: This might provide the answer to someone who can make better sense of it than me. But it does seem that Setanta Ireland could have shown the game as RTÉ decided not to, seeing as Setanta Ireland look to have some sort of deal with UEFA allowing them to pay to broadcast games in Ireland, as long as it's not a game RTÉ have first decided to show.

They were at it again on the Six One News yesterday evening, Derry and Pats got the briefest of mentions right at the end of the sports report, a quick fart would have lasted longer!! It was all about the golf and the Tour de France even got a decent mention ffs!!
The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.
