    Recent Developments

Due to ongoing difficulties with the official website (which we are working to resolve), Sligo Rovers wish to inform the fans of some recent developments.

As you are aware Sean Doherty has recently left the club to return to the challenge of English football. We are sorry to lose him and thank him for his contribution to the club during his time with us. Mauro Almieda has already departed some weeks back. These losses, coupled with a string of serious injuries have depleted the playing squad at an important time of the season.

The following players have officially signed and will all be in contention for this weekend with the exception of Eoin Doyle and Joe Kendrick who will be available for the game against St. Pats:

Matthew Blinkhorn – a striker of proven ability who has experience of league football in the UK with Blackpool & Morecambe.
Rob Turner – a striker who joins from Preston North End where he had a very successful season last year. Rob will hopefully deliver on his considerable promise.
Eoin Doyle – a midfielder signed from Shamrock Rovers. Eoin has proven quality and LOI experience and will provide welcome competition for places.
Dean Marshall – a left sided youngster who we have taken from the Bohemians reserves but promises to be a very useful acquisition.
Joe Kendrick – a left sided player previously with Newcastle Utd, Drogheda Utd and recently playing in Asia, Joe will bring quality and experience to our side.
Ger Rafter – again another youngster who plays centre back and will hopefully break into our first team in time.

Some of our new recruits join at the start of their playing season and need time to develop match fitness and sharpness. We hope that our supporters will encourage and welcome them to our set-up as we seek to build on the work the team has done to date. This season has been challenging given the injuries, number of matches and increased competitiveness in the league. We now need everyone associated with the Club to begin again the work towards improving standards on and off the pitch – there is always an excuse or reason for not getting involved in the process!

We witness the ongoing difficulties at other clubs and are aware that such problems are an ever present danger for Sligo Rovers should complacency set-in. Apologies for any mistakes made, they were all made honestly and not intentionally. We look forward to seeing you all and a new-look Rovers at home against Pats next weekend.
This game takes place on Sunday evening, the 26th July at 7.45pm.

thanks kevin appreciate the update, we are calling all year for new blood so hopefully the new signings will help us improve our league position as everyone will agree we are far better than the table suggests. we will spur on the new sighnings and allow time for match fitness as we all realise a lot of them have not played much over the summer. come on the bit o red

    Hi Rovers 1,
As far as I'm aware he wasn't with Shels but I'll find out for you.
    I think he's only 18.

Shane Filan is set to realise a childhood dream by leading his own soccer team against home town club Sligo Rovers. The Westlife singer, a Rovers fan all his life, is stepping up several divisions for the game next month. Shane is striker for his father-in-law's work team from the Sligo Plumbing and Heating company. He has been playing on the astroturf in Division Two of his local Nightowls League. The 30-year-old plans to recruit one or two surprise guests for the game at Sligo Showgrounds against League of Ireland Premier Division side Rovers on Ausgust 5. He set up the event for pals Lesley Ann Culkin, 26, and 27-year-old Hilary Jones who are climbing Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, to raise funds for the Irish Red Cross. HR consultant Lesley Ann, whose boyfriend Michael Walsh is Shane's brother-in-law, said they were discussing a football match as a likely fundraiser when the singer volunteered. She said: "He has so many other things to do that we are absolutely thrilled. I know it will be a great night at the Showgrounds." Shane has been banging home winners during the past 10 months for his team in the amateur astro-turf league at a sports complex in Sligo. He said: "We've won a good few games. It's good craic. I started off on the left-wing, but I wasn't great there. "Then I moved up front and I started scoring goals. I'm getting there slowly but surely." Westlife's link to soccer goes back 12 years to their first TV appearance when they performed at half-time during a Sligo Rovers home match and it was shown on RTE's Nationwide. Shane said: "It was a 30-second clip. We were delighted at the time. It was great exposure and we felt very excited when we saw ourselves. "We were on telly and we thought we were very famous. We were 17 or 18 years of age at the time with dreams of becoming Backstreet Boys or Take That. "Little did we know that a year later it would all kick off for us and it's been mental ever since."
