    Good Cheap EU satnav/GPS recommendations

    "...the christening party @rsehole
    who hitherto had blurred
    my perception of man
    as natures final word
    was fleeing from the lava
    his SatNav pleading thus
I'm not from 'round here mate you should've got the bus
    "

...Not that one. Thanks. Heading to France on hols for 12 days in a few weeks and thought I might as well buy one as rent.

If it's got a sexy Helena Bonham Carter-esque English totty voice like the one I had on my German rental for the Georgia match -so much the better!

Cheap might not be the best approach, you get what you pay for in GPS.

I spend a good bit of time researching GPS last year or the year before and the prevailing opinion was to buy Garmin, not TomTom; still seems to be the case. I have a nuvi 760 and find it pretty good, used it in Croatia and it was surprisingly accurate (for the location). You'll still need maps alongside to be sure, but that's the case with all GPS'.

On ebay for €185. A little more than I'd intended spending but not bad all the same.

Same crowd have a nuvi 250 for €119.

Add another €12.50 P&P to either of those.

Make sure you check the map capability before you buy, some only do Ireland and the UK. I think the first digit is the model, second two the maps.

It claims to have "FULL UK, IRELAND & EUROPE MAPPING (INCLUDING EASTERN EUROPE) BUILT-IN".

Just following up on this. Eventually bought a Garmin Street Pilot C550 on ebay. In my hand for 130 bucks. It was new alright but I wouldn't be surprised if it was ex-display. Worked fine and did exactly what it was supposed to as well. Updated the maps (free update included from Garmin) before taking it off to France and it gave us stirling service.

Would happily recommend. Only drawback is they're not slimline like the newer models so you'll scarcely carry it about in your pocket.

Heading to Florida (orlando - naples -miami) in a few weeks and going to be driving this route, the car hire company are charging a fair bit extra for GPS. Is it worth it or would it be silly to go without? any experiences?
