    Glen Johnson.

I really do not get all the hype at the moment about this guy. There was hype when he first came along at West Ham and Chelsea spent way too much money on him. He was then found out and now the hype has come again. He is a decent player but Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City all after him. If Man City sign him and sell Richard Dunne, it says it all about the regime andn it will be destined to fail in my view.

Liverpool supposedly tabled a £17m bid for him according to some paper I read this morning. Supposedly, this is in and around his current valuation. Has the world gone mad?
He is not much better than Arbeloa and anyways I can't see Benitez blowing his budget on a player who is hardly going to make a difference in their title bid.
Either way he's not worth that kind of money for whoever buys him.

Totally overrated player who couldn't keep his place at Chelsea. Gives the ball away constantly. Don't rate him at all.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

A player is only worth what someone is willing to pay for him.

It is possible for a player to get better over time . Probably went to Chelsea too young .

Seems to be maturing well now though

He's English and has some caps for England = multiply his true value by 4.

I'd be very surprised if Benitez wasted a good proportion of his transfer budget on a dodgy right back. I imagine they'll try and off load a few Liverpool players in return.

Were you surprised when he did this in previous years?

GJ looked good going forward and suspect defensively with Chelsea. He appears to have improved but the fee seems way over the top imo.

well according to some media reports and rat face supporters he didn't want Keane. It was forced upon him. Now he has TOTAL control over his summer signings hence my surprise if he went down that route. I'm sure he'd rather waste the cash on a Spanish player.

£17m for Glen Johnson makes Ronaldo look a bargain

I don't know. I think he's a decent player who will more than likely improve further. He's only 24 and in the general run of things £17m might not prove to be totally outrageous. It is a surprisingly large amount for a right back but that's not to say it won't prove a good investment. Benitez seems to be signing full back after full back these days anyway so if it puts a stop to that it could be money well spent. Arbeloa is a very poor player anyway in my opinion, both defensively and going forward.

Full backs seem to have replaced wingers somewhat in the modern game in the sense that they see more of the ball than any other position and get themselves into good positions to cross into the box. Johnson is good going forward, very comfortable in possession, although, that said, it should be noted that transfer fees are automatically going to be massively inflated thanks to the merry-go-round effect of Real's purchasing policy. Also, Benitez will surely help him tighten up his defensive responsibilities.
And you ask me to help you??!! Man is evil!!!! Capable of nothing but destruction!

£17m for Glen Johnson is crazy and it's not like he's going to make a huge difference in their title bid. At best he's worth about £7m.

The price tags and money being paid for players is nothing short of crazy these days! It's not good. Like, a £76m price tag on Ibrahimovic?! That is just insanity.

Totally agree especially as there was talk of him going to Liverpool last Christmas for £8M, how did he double in value all of a sudden?
Could be down to the money Pompey still owe Liverpool for Crouch.

I think this put's it into perspective. Who was the better right back last season, Johnson or John O'Shea? IMO O'Shea. would anybody bid 17M for him ? probably not.I know O'shea is four years older but still only 28, and in fairness, its not like the likes of Chelsea / Liverpool are buying for the future Just shows that the valuation of Johnson is nuts

I agree that' he's a £7-8 million player at best but he signed a new four year contract in January so that would be where the majority of the increase comes from I'd imagine.

Portsmouth owe £7 million still from the Crouch transfer so think that has something to do with the high figure.

Chelsea have also agreed to pay the £17m or so price tag. They sold him for less than 25% of that amount to Pompey.

I dont know where he will end up but one things for sure, football has gone mad!

In all fairness a big difference in the quality of player O'Shea was playing with last season to Johnson so imo Johnson had the better season.
