    Cool PreSeason

    Hey there short and simple, looking for some advice on preseason even a few drills. Whats the best way to go about it, when to start all that kinda stuff, if you have any imput on anything i'd like to hear it.

    Only to the forum so bare with me.
    So your looking for advice on pre season training.
    Now here i am a veteran of. you dont say whether its for yourself or a complete team!
    How competitively you play.
    where your fitness is at the moment and what you'd like to work on.

    ill give you some of my experiences over the years.
    Im 34 was very fit and active up to a few weeks ago. im laid up with a pretty bad injury for a bit.
    you can approach pre season in my mind in only 1 way if your fitness is down a bit and that is to start running about 6 - 8 weeks before your team mates that gives you a big advantage when they start.
    usually most players will do about a month and a half pre season lenghty running. it builds stamina which you'll benefit from right away.
    if youve a bike add this in do the bike 2 days a week and run 2 days a week. every other day is about right it gives you recovery time in between. get fitted properly for decent running shoes if your in tarmac go the cheap route and your joints will suffer.

    If my memory of JAYK69 posts is correct, he's (or she) is involved in training a team, so I'd guess it is more team pre-season training advice is being sought... (only a guess now mind you)

    Still here

    Sorry moved house and no broadband, disaster!!! innishvilla had it spot on. I now train 3 senior teams in a club expanding big time so we're starting preseason on the 23rd of this month and season starts in september, we wanna win this year, although fitness is decent it needs drastic improvement from last season. im still listen to ya's and sorry for goin missing but back now crazyhorse.

    are you mad, you will kill your team. thats well over 2 months pre-season i think that is crazy pal. the last week in july or first week in august would be plenty soon enough trust me. i will start back on the 14th of july and our league kicks off second week in august and i can guarentee you that like last season we will be the fittest team in the league by far. maybe your right but thats just my opinion and i think its way too much pre season.

    I'm inclined to agree without quite going to the calling you mad extreme. Yes it is good to be fit, but remember to do well in the league the team will need to be still fresh come May next year... The league can't be won in September. That said sometimes it can be lost so it is a bit of a balancing act. I don't think it is ideal to be firing on all cylinders come the start of the season, impossible to keep it up for the season. As I said a bit of a balancing act...

    I did the preseason training last year with 2 teams playing in the AUL. The league didn't start for us until the last week of August and I started the training at the end of June.

    In order to decide what's necessary for the preseaon training you need to look at the 3 teams and not only look at their likely fitness levels - base the answer on how they finished the season but also look at what work needs to be done on set plays both attacking/defending and then on how well the players know each other.

    The reason I started so early was we had a number of new players coming in so we not only needed a lot of fitness work we also need to get players used to playing with each other.

    For me if you were to work on the premise of 3 sessions a week then I would start 6 weeks in advance. 18 sessions is not a lot of time to prepare for a season but is enough to give the lads a 6 week break from the previous season. Also if you factor in at least 3 games in that time then in reality you only have 15 sessions to prepare.

    First session is the beep test as it's not only a good way of assessing fitness levels it also builds camradary with team mates that have to go "through it" together. After the test I would do some simple set pieces that you want to put in place for the season.

    The bulk of the sessions in preseason should be focused on reducing your recovery time between sprints. At the end of the day what you do in training needs to mirror your behaviour on the pitch. So having your players running lap upon lap of a pitch is going to do nothing other than prepare them for cross country running. Sprints of various differences to begin with and each session reduce the recovery time between each sprint starting at 90 seconds and look to reduce down to between 10-20 depending on the level/age of your team. Sprinting with the ball is just as important, too ofter preseason for many means you don't see a ball for weeks - this is a football season you are preparing for so it's madness to leave a ball out of the equation. At least 2 of your sessions should include working on set pieces - look back at your past season - how many goals were conceded from corners/freekicks and how many did you score from. 3v3 and 4v3 games are a great way of working on passing movements as well as fitness and should be incorporated in most preseason sessions. 15mins of a warm up with 90 mins of work and 10 mins of a warm down is ample for Amateur level preseason.

    Theres pro's and cons to both yer arguments guys.
    what i used to do myself was the week our season finished id btake a break for a month and go back running 2 days a week till the start of pre season. when that kicked in id then do a bit of mountain biking 2 times a week as well outside of the pre season but you need to be well conditioned to do that and your on a knife edge injury wise too.

    as celticlads has said 6 weeks before season start is enough for most teams specially with the length of the seasons presently.. if your team happens to be fortunate enough to get good runs in all there competitions then during the season those teams will do a little extra during there midweek sessions and also usually throw in saturdays before big games as well.... its very easy to burn out a player doing this....
    players should be eased into there pre season not made run 6 miles on hilly terrain till they cant breath...
    iv been doing alot of homework recently on pre season as ill be coaching a team this year in premiere and 95% of professional coachs say that endless running round a field is no good ...
    reason being soccer is a game of stop start for most players ... they'll sprint maybe 40 50 60 yards every 2 or 3 minutes there very very rarely running constantly for 90 minutes... you wouldnt train a football player to run a marathon or train a marathon runner to play football so whats the point in endless running... everything should involve a ball .....
    Plus it doesnt give players time to think .. in training they shouldnt know what there doing on there next exercise until its upon them...
    my philosophy is to have them fit to a point where they can make one run after another over 50 yards at there maximum pace and believe me if any player can do that they'll last there 90 mins no bother.....

    agree with you on this one,the days of running 8 miles on hard roads or round and round piches are well gone,but some coaches in premier will still use this come preseason,dont know how players would put up this type training anymore.and balls are a must in every training session along with shuttles, small bursts of pace.theres no harm in doing a fifteen minute run and that would show your how bad or good players fitness is.if they could do say 12-13 laps in that time you should concentrate on ball work

    Run the ball's off them first of all, then next few sessions do sprints using 4 cones running to first back then second back and so on it'l be tough but they'l prefer it more then the cross country running in the first session, get the stamina levels up's and they can train longer and get more tech sessons in.

    With all due respect bud where in the name of god is the average premiere team gonna get time to squeeze all those into an hour and a half session.... 2 times a week..... id be all for it dont get me wrong id love nothing more than that ... most teams should have the ladders poles and hurdles for sacs training if they havent there missing out......

    I know with my club there'll definitely be SAQ and circuits, normal training would regularly have a bit of set piece practice, shape is probably not worked on enough, the spinning tends to get a go during the Winter months.

    Core is probably covered just not specified, polymetrics and aqua jogging haven't popped up yet!

    We're due to start back on the 2nd of July, a bit early I thing seeing as the season didn't kick off until the last week in August last year. There'll be plenty of cross country to look forward to in the first few weeks too.
