Speaking after Ireland training earlier today, Christie, who qualifies for Ireland through his Clontarf-born grandmother, mentioned how he had been approached by his native country but that the opportunity of more game-time with Ireland as well as the personal touch of the team’s manager ensured it was a pretty straight-forward decision to make.

The England U21s were in touch as well but for me the Republic of Ireland was the better option. They’ve not got many right-backs here so that was the main thing but the manager getting in touch with me – that’s always a pleasing aspect. There are more opportunities and they’ve got a good team here and the manager getting in touch with me – that was more of a selling point as well.”

Jacob and Josh Murphy linked with move to Ireland.

The twins have emerged on the radar of Martin O’Neill, with the duo yet to feature for Gareth Southgate’s England Under-21s side, despite representing the Three Lions at various youth levels, opening the possibility of the pair switching their allegiance.
The pair are understood to harbour ambitions to play for England before exploring other options, and Republic of Ireland officials are looking into their qualification criteria to see if they can get them on switch their international allegiances.

Scott Hogan with a hat trick for Brentford today - he has 13 goals in 16 league appearances so far! Call him up!

Interesting - seems the main influencing factor was neither a major emotional connection to Ireland nor a belief that we were more of a sure thing for international football (in spite of him admitting that he figured there was more of an opportunity with us, there was concurrent interest from England), but rather the respect and personal touch afforded him by our management team - so credit to Martin O'Neill on that one

Hmm...how do you feel about that one? I think there was some talk of them as potential call-ups when Josh broke into the Norwich team a few years back but they seemed focused on their England underage careers at that point. Since then they both seem to have bounced around with loans a little before both getting back into the Norwich first team this season. With a number of young midfielders close to a breakthrough, and a few others after having now made their mark, is this a case where we should be focusing on who we have rather than who we could have?

Paddy Lacey from Accrington ? Some fresh green blood there unlike Conway and McCarthy?

This reeks of a planted agent story, I fully expect both will be in the next England U21 squad.

Would be delighted if I was wrong though!!

If Hogan is not in the squad for the Georgia/Moldova matches then I would love to ask the FAI what they are doing exactly in relation to player recruitment especially in a position where we badly need a good goalscorer. All we have on board in MON's tenure is Cyrus Christie. Personally I wouldn't be surprised to see Hogan hedge his bets. He will get a Premier League move soon enough and I am sure will be reminded of the Jamie Vardy story by his agent and others. I hope I am wrong.

Why do people keep forgetting David McGoldrick?

It is easy to forget McGoldrick as he is injured every 2 minutes. Seems to be made of paper. Re Hogan he is playing down Republic of Ireland link

Guarantee people will still be calling for O'Neill's head when he isn't named in the next squad.

Would have earned his first senior cap under MON but he played under 17 for us even.

Those Hogan quotes are very hard to draw much from. Does he mean he'd say no if the call came? Hard to conclude. His form is fairly irresistible though.

Scott Hogan played down talk of a Republic of Ireland call up after blasting a hat-trick in Brentford's 5-0 demolition of Preston.
The Bees striker has 13 goals in 15 Championship games since returning from two anterior cruciate ligament injuries.
And Ireland fans have been calling on Martin O'Neill, who was present at Griffin Park on Saturday, to call up Hogan.
But the striker is purely focused on performing for Brentford because of the way the club look after him.
He said: “I know we don't go back on it but I have been out injured but it's important to be playing as many games for Brentford at the moment.

Those clips are all I've really seen of Hogan, kind of reminds me of Jordan Rhodes a little bit, very natural in front of goal but possibly lacking a bit of pace? For all his goals Rhodes was only ever really hot property in Championship circles. I could be miles off with that comparison though, basing it on so little evidence. His comments make sense from his own point of view I suppose, things are going so well for him I could see why he wouldn't want to jeapordise that by overdoing it, hopefully that's all it is anyway.

That's a real case of the headline saying more than the actual quote.

How long ago is it since he returned from injury? 6, 7 months?

Lads like Arter, McGoldrick, Pilkington, Meyler, Wilson, Gibson and Duffy just off the top of my head have had a torrid time with injuries in the past and have all accepted International call ups as soon as they have recovered - some have even exacerbated injuries or played with injuries such is their professionalism or desire to play for their country.

The lad has not committed to us yet. It's as simple as that.

He openly tweets and comments about supporting England and is talking about playing Premiership football.

It's unfortunate, but England is his first choice.

And it is highly unlikely he would turn down an England call up citing injuries that he recovered from 7 months ago.
