I'm sure that there has been some communication between Noble and the Irish set up. Maybe Triggs has contacted Noble's bulldog Winston or maybe Roy rang Noble and didn't like his answering message, labelling him a spoofer! It always intrigues me how such negotiations transpire. May be one for Roy's next book.

Absolutely nothing worthwhile in this and we don't even get a mention but...

Should Noble get England call up?

For what it's worth, Harry Kane scores with a nice strike against Asteras in the Europa League: https://vine.co/v/OhedhnU6j1O

Got a hat trick in the end, now he's in goal and he just fumbled a simple free kick into his goal. He's still two goals up though.

That was pretty funny and, for me, put a serious dent in his Irish credentials; the lad obviously never played GAA in his youth!

That's why all teams should have an Irish player at all times, in case you need someone to throw in goal.

The problem is that's also pretty close to my 'optimistic' view...

The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist thinks it will change; the realist adjusts the sails.

Hopefully, this news ends the speculation, onc eand for all. Actually Danny, you asked a question recently about who we turn to if our casualty rate in midfield continues and I sarcastically mentioned Noble. And after having just looked at the Joey O'Brien thread and reflecting on it, O'Brien really can be an asset to us. He can play left and right back, and he initially broke into the Bolton team as a central midfielder and showed lots of promise. I know injury has caught up with him, but I think injury free he offers many options that O'Neill. On the LB debate which occurred somewhere on the site recently, we really haven't produced a top quality LB since Staunton, but loads of RBs! I notice the other day too that Stephen O'Halloran is now at Scunny, he always looked class, but injury has greatly affected his career. And what about Greg Cunningham, another who has not made the step up yet? What has become of him?

O'Halloran was at Stockport in non-league last I saw. Cunningham is in and out of the team at Bristol City, who are looking strong for promotion back to the Championship this year. Irish defenders Derrick Williams and Brendan Maloney are also there.

I don't think O'Brien will play much football other than club football for the remainder of his career. Given his record and proneness to injury, I get the impression that participation in international football is too risky for his livelihood. That's not a criticism of him either, by the way. It's fair enough that he would participate only in what he really has to to make a living from the game but keep the risk of injury low. He's had a luckless career and it would be foolish for him to threaten what limited longevity he may have.

I hope this is the place to put lads that you might think are eligible into.

I spotted the name McCarthy coming on for Southampton yesterday against Newcastle.
Jason McCarthy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_McCarthy. Good chance he must have some irish relations (particularly with his 2nd name being Sean) - a natural leader and a rightback / centre-back by the sounds of it. Hasn't played for England to date but the Southampton academy seems to be producing some great players at the moment. I haven't seen the name mentioned here before.

There's a Jake Flannigan in the youth set-up there as well. He's an England-born midfielder who may be eligible on account of his name; I have no idea. They have a Sam Gallagher up front too. Not sure if he is or was eligible but he has played for both England and Scotland at under-19 level and Wiki says he has already used up his switch of association. That would be dependent on him having played in competitive FIFA-recognised games for both countries, of course.

Sounds like a nationalist. The plot thickens.

Yeah, not sure how I missed Ryan Seagar. Sure why don't you make some enquiries and get back to us on that? Good man!

Noble, Kane, Redmond, McManaman, Davies, Bamford, Naughton etc. ...there's enough half decent players available that could do a job for us but the FAI do not have the ability to get any of them. Kane was there for the taking for a few years but the FAI I'm sure sat back on it and now there's no chance. This Jason McCarthy lad is probably eligible. Instead of going for him now, watch the FAI sit back for a year or two & wait for him to get a few more appearances under his belt. By then he'll be offered an English U21 cap & the chance will be lost. Sure they couldn't even hold on to Michael Keane who has an Irish father or they couldn't convince Shane O'Neill to play for us despite having two Irish parents from Cork & Kerry. I have none to little faith any more in FAI re recruitment at senior level.
