Winds me up when lads say "the country" I.e. it was a great result for the country.

O'Dowda and Arter both guilty of it.

For no other reason only it sounds jarring.

Whichever country they're playing for obviously. It's generally only one so should be easy enough to figure out.

Let's be honest here. If Arter said "Good morning" you'd find it jarring. Now that Robbie has retired, you have found your new target or is it Walters, or both ? I have no issue with "the country". I play for a club and often say "the club" rather than the name of it. I think it's a lot worse if they said "the Republic of Ireland". I am happy with the "country" or "the team" or "the boys".
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

I can't claim to know all of his quotes but I've noticed O'Dowda referring to 'my country' or 'my national team' a few times since he was called up also. Proud as Punch he is.

I noticed Pilkington used to say it too.

I have never once heard an Irish born player refer to the country.

Remember when Simon Cox had Galway as part of his location on his Twitter profile until he stopped getting call ups.

It's probably just part of their syntax.

Like how Robbie used to start every sentence with "listen".

    Probably just a regional thing.

    He also said "the country":

But Irish legend, Keane, has since come out to rally for a Yes vote.

In an emotive letter sent to the Sunday World, Ireland's highest ever goalscorer has called on his people to support marriage equality.

“Although I am currently working and living outside of the country, I have been following the commentary and debate on the upcoming Referendum on same-sex marriage,” wrote Keane.

And look what happened. He jumped ship and retired the moment it got difficult. No commitment #NotAnIrishman

The context Robbie used it in there is entirely different in fairness.

You're right. I read that wrong just like I did with Jack Grealish that time.

    We're only human.

Unless people usually say "I am currently working outside of my country."

    Perhaps I'm wrong.

How you manage to see offence in everything is to be commended.

I get wound up by references to the "Republic". That's where you should aim your ire. You might get a bit more traction.

Jeez, we're now getting precious about how players refer to Ireland! Some posters on here need to get a life. No wonder, as has been mentioned before, many posters have just given up on this site. That old feeling of excitement and enjoyment when opening threads has been replaced by a feeling of dread at what irrational, nauseating post you might find.
