And what were Hogan's words? That he needed to manage his game time having been out with a serious injury for so long? That he'd find it difficult to say no to his hero Roy Keane? Any more incriminating evidence?

He said he hadn't thought about which country he wanted to play for yet. He was also quoted about supporting England during the Euros.

I wouldn't read too much into the Keane comments at all. He was a Man Utd fan growing up and Keane was his favourite player.

As I said, I would put more stock in his own words and actions - like turning down a meeting with MON - then I would prompted soundbites from an Irish player.

I will eat my hat if he is named in the squad this afternoon.

Why wouldn't he support England? He is English you know. I don't think anybody is claiming that he's more Irish than English or anything like that, he's clearly not. I think it's pretty obvious if he was unquestionably good enough to play for England, then of course that is what he would chose to do. That's not the situation though.

Maybe he doesn't need to manage his fitness to this extent and he's just buying himself some time until he decides fully what he'd prefer to do (i.e. play for Ireland pretty much right now or hold tough for hopefully making the England squad/team some day). I'd agree that has to be a possibility but I'm okay with it for now, as long as he doesn't allow it to develop into a circus like JG.

Did he actually turn down a meeting with MON? Or is this an assumption based on the fact that O'Neill has been in contact with his agent as opposed to the player himself?

I wouldn't put any weight in the Roy Keane reference either, I was just summarising the brief comments he's made on the matter.

Your hat remains intact. Was it a fedora, a bowler or a humbug, sorry homburg ?
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

Lads any one know story with McEleney ? He was cruelly treated by doolin at 19s level then seemed to switch http://m.goal.com/s/en-ie/news/3942/...gue-says-derry . Did he ever play for the north at senior level. Sounds from the article that the Fifa paper work went in but he would still have a switch left to come back to us wouldn't he? He played under 16 for the north but that does not count with Fifa . Lovely player

He never played for them and it never went through. He did an interview a year or so back saying he still wants to play for Ireland.

Ireland's saviour Scott Hogan has went four games without a goal.

It's worth mentioning that Chris Martin, Jordan Rhodes and Ross McCormack have better goalscoring records at that level and have made little to no impact at International level.

Our other saviour, Patrick Bamford, meanwhile, continues his annual struggle to get into PL match day squads.

I do wish Hogan would make a decision one way or other and quit hemming and hawing.

His "training programme" and Intl decision are hardly mutually exclusive.

I don't see how it stops him from finding the time to pick up a phone or make a decision on his Intl future.

Not to worry - Lukas Jutkiewicz just scored again - that's 5 in 9 so my prediction is coming true. More seriously, considering that our main strike force is made up of Long, Walters, Doyle and Murphy and that it's likely that three of those will retire after this campaign so it's really important that we have replacements for them - I guess the obvious response is to give McGoldrick and Rooney some game time in preparation for that time, so they should both feature in the Iceland friendly in March. And with Long out, we could possibly use McGoldrick off the bench against Austria, as he has a few caps under his belt, at least, and showed well in the game against the USA a couple of years ago. And if Hogan decides to turn us down, then we may have to look at options like Jutkiewicz and Will Keane

Patrick Bamford is perfect for us, he won't ever play for England and when he finally gets a club where he gets his place (possible in the championship) he will start scoring freely again

Some people think it's a sign he will declare for us.

You know, because only Irish people enjoy UFC.

Will Keane out for a year, so that potential ship has sailed for now.
