Ireland are playing at Craven Cottage next week.
Wasn't aware he was ill. Never saw him play, but well aware of his standing within the game, here and in Preston. RIP.![]()
And also in the USAbut well aware of his standing within the game, here and in Preston
Saw Alan playing for Ireland in the early 1970s and he never let us down. I wonder are there any other father/son combinations who have both played for their country as goalkeepers.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.
Has Kasper Schmeichel played for Denmark?
Gary Kelly was in several squads but I don't think he was ever capped. Anyone know?
Played at U-21 and B-International level and was unlucky not to get a full cap. He played for Jack Charlton at Newcastle and had at least one season in the old English First Division. At the time he was probably in direct competition with Seamus McDonagh, Gerry Peyton and Packie. I always thought he looked a little shorter than his brother Alan so this might have counted against him.

He's played in a few U-21 games, don't think he's played for the senior team though. There were rumours for a while that the FA were going to approach him to play for England
Eidur Gudjohnsen played in the same Iceland team as his dad, he came on as a sub for his dad in his debut, AFAIK they're the only father/son team to play in the same international side.
Pepe Reina (Liverpool) and his father Miguel both played for Spain.
Peter Enckelman (Cardiff City) and his father Goran both played for Finland.
Nikolay Mihaylov, who is one of the two keepers in the squad to play us next month, and his father Borislav (who captained the team when they finished 4th in the 1994 WCFs) both played for Bulgaria.
Honest! I am not a secret Tim nor a closet Sham - I really am a Seagull.
RIP
Will the be a min silence at games this weekend?
RIP Alan. I stood behind the goal in Dalymount as a nipper on many occasions and watched him single-handedly defy the likes of Hungary, Czechslovakia and many others. He was a great keeper. He played in the 1964 cup final for Preston. They also named a stand after him at Deepdale.
Always look on the bright side of life
RIP Alan
RIP Alan Kelly Sr.
I never realized Gary was his son as well. He was an unused subsitute either 8 or 12 times (I can't recall) Ireland were undefeated every time he was an unused subsitute and he should have been given a cap, even in a token match mid 90's.
Hard to believe Kielys only 2 years older than A. Kelly Jr. he could still be playing if it wasn't for that injury.
