Suppose to be one alright. Hope it doesn't go ahead though.

What link up are you referring to?

Subsequent to that infamous 1979 tie concerted efforts were made by both clubs to form a close link - and the Dunfield youth football project emerged.

Waterford fans may also remember a certain Jeff McNamara who signed from Linfield for two games for a promotion play-off (scoring twice in the first tie)

I don't think a friendly in Oriel would be a good idea - it would attract plenty of scumbags intent on trouble and I can't see any benefits that offset this risk

There was something on Elevenaside on Thursday about renewing links with Linfield. Thats all I know. Was hope more Dundalk fans could share some more light on it.

Currently, there is no new link-up with Linfield. Although there was a earlier successful collaboration that was known as Dunfield, and Club secretary Kevin Holland mentioned a desire to persue a renewal of that link, at a recent fans forum.

The possibility of a friendly at Oriel Park has also been mooted, and this has got mixed reaction from fans, questioning if it is worth the security risks attached to it.

I suspect that the extratime article has its origins in the article below from Dundalk Democrat, which also gives more info on the Dunfield project.

    Dunfield project to be revived?
Holland hints at renewing links with Belfast club

    Published Date:
    24 June 2009

DUNDALK are set to welcome Linfield to Oriel Park for a friendly after manager Sean Connor told a Fan's Forum last Wednesday night that the club are actively seeking a match with the Windsor Park outfit.
Club secretary Kevin Holland, who along with Connor fielded questions at the DFC Trust organised evening, also revealed that the club are interested in reviving links with the Belfast club.

Holland emphasised the many positives that came out of the old Dunfield project which promoted links between the fans of Dundalk and Linfield in the late nineties.

The initiative, which organised leisure and social development through football, was set up in 1999 to allow children from both sides of the border to forge lasting friendships.

However the plug was pulled on the scheme in 2002 when Co-Operation North refused to hand over any money to continue funding the project, despite the fact it had brought thousands of kids together from both sides of the border.

Some supporters at the forum questioned the safety aspects of inviting Linfield back to Oriel Park. Serious disturbances took place at Oriel Park when the two clubs met each other in a European Cup tie in 1979. The trouble led to the second leg been played behind closed doors in Holland, a game that Dundalk won. The projected friendly with the Blues is set to take place within the next three weeks and Sean Connor is delighted at the prospect of facing David Jeffrey's men.

"Being a Belfast man I'm very excited at the prospect of Linfield coming. I know there's a bit of history between the two clubs being involved in cross community projects. A lot has happened up north and down here and it would be a great chance to show how much we have moved on", he said.

There was a big underage link up under way from 2000 onwards but lack of funds and more emphasis on the first team saw this go down hill but SC is adament to get this link up back up and running so!

With the cost of renting Thomond Park, i'd say Limerick are trying to make sure the friendly(s) sell well to make any sort of a profit for these games.
As a Boro fan I hope the Limerick game comes off. Anyone recommend anywhere to stay?
