Ferrari to withdraw from Formula 1

This will be an interesting game of chicken!

Opposition to a budget cap and technical changes.

There's no way they'll be let pull out, but will Ecclestone et al back down?

I was asking what are they going to do about the F1 side of things.

Are they just going to cut their losses if F1 don't back down?

I'm sure they'll reach a compromise, but yes, if they pull out of F1, they'll probably shut that part of the company down completely. The only other situation I could imagine would be if several other teams joined them in setting up a rival organisation, but that seems very unlikely.

Especially with the A1 formula stuff as well; there's surely only so many motor racing competitions you can have competing for the same viewers.

One or other will back down, and we'll have the status quo team-wise next season, I reckon. But it'll be interesting to see who.

Where's schumi, incidentally? Surely he, of all people, would have some idea!

What might well happen is that break away manufacturers would buy A1GP (it's losing a lot of money I believe, crowds and TV viewership are quite small) and use their TV and circuit deals for their new series. Ferrari supply cars to A1 so there's already a link there.

People mostly follow drivers above all so if a break away does happen with higher budgets, the top drivers will follow and so will a lot of the crowds. I can't imagine TV companies or race tracks being too enamoured with that and money will flow out of F1 very quickly.

The thing is that this has happened before, in America. When Indycar split into CART and the IRL, what happened was that both dropped in popularity so now NASCAR is the dominant motorsport in America. The same may well happen with F1.

They've come back together now, so would the manufacturer's head there instead? When Mansell went over, there was talk of European races (I think Donnington were even talking about putting in an oval).

There were European races. I think the British one was in Rockingham (or something like that). It was an oval track. I think the guy who lost both his legs (Zanardi?) did it in Germany too

    F1 teams drop breakaway bombshell

Formula 1 has been thrown into chaos after eight of its major teams said they are now planning to set up a rival championship for the 2010 season.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/moto...ne/8108488.stm

    ---------------------------------------

Top teams have reiterated their threat to form a breakaway championship next season. I still can't see it going ahead though. I'm sure some kind of agreement will be done in time.

All the big guns too. No way the FIA can just bluff them. They'll have to compromise or they're gone. The breakaway championship would probably take a dip in popularity over the current one, but Williams and Force India aren't exactly enough to compete there.

If it as an oval then it was Rockingham, it's the only Oval track in the UK.
