Are you sure that's not tomorrow night the 7th? That's when it's listed for anyway.

EDIT Forget that Sam. FAI had Wednesday's date as the 7th on their Exel sheet

10 MEN FC CARLOW DRAW 3-3 WITH ST PATRICKS ATHLETIC IN THRILLING GAME

Reduced to 10 men and 3-1 down inside 30mins, FC Carlow showed real fighting spirit as they fought back to secure a valuable away point against St Patrick’s Athletic last Sunday, in a thrilling game that produced 6 goals.

A midday kick-off, glorious sunshine and an immaculate pitch in Richmond Park was the setting for FC Carlow’s as they travelled to Inchicore for this A Championship game, where less than 24 hours earlier St Pats and Cork City played a premier division game in front of the Setanta Sports cameras.

St Pats made their intentions clear from the first whistle, as they started at a blistering pace and were awarded and scored a penalty after 3 minutes. The home team continued to exert a lot pressure on what looked a nervous FC Carlow defense and were rewarded again inside 10 minutes when they doubled their lead. A free kick wide on the left was flicked on at the front post to the incoming Pats centre back, who headed home from close range.

Undeterred by St Pats magnificent start, FC Carlow replied almost instantly, when Andrew Hickey’s deep cross from the right wing was headed past the stranded St Pats keeper by Robbie Farrell, who climbed high towards the back post. The visitors naturally, grew in confidence following their reply and created a number of good scoring chances as the game flowed from end to end, with both teams playing good football.

The game was to take a dramatic turn however, on the half hour mark, when FC Carlow keeper, Jeff Moran received a red card, following a save on the edge of the box, which the referee adjudged him to have carried outside the box. In a brave move, FC Carlow withdrew a defender for the substitute goal keeper Adam Doyle, deciding to play the rest of the game with a 3 man back line. Doyle’s first task, unfortunately, was to pick the ball from the back of the net following the resulting free kick.

Down to 10 men, 3-1 down and an hour still to play, it certainly looked as if FC Carlow were facing an uphill battle, but all credit must go to the players who showed tremendous character and actually managed a much improved performance following the sending off. A glimmer of hope seemed to appear just before half time, when good combination play in midfield between Tomas Brennan and Neale Phelan put Andrew Hickey through on goal. Hickey showed great composure as he calmly slotted the ball under the advancing St Pats keeper to send the visitors in at the break with some renewed hope in a game which could and possibly should have been all over at this stage.

The second half didn’t have quite as much excitement as the first half, as St Pats struggled to play at the same high tempo as in the first half. This was due in the most part to FC Carlow’s much improved performance, as they looked a much more solid unit with the back three of Emmet Phelan, Adam Byrne, Jimmy Dermody and defensive midfielder Cathal Coughlan showing their unquestionable class. Goal opportunities were certainly not as plentiful as in the first half, but there were some very good chances created by both teams. Pulling the strings in midfield, Neale Phelan's range of passing and insight was clear for all to see, while Andrew Hickey’s pace upfront was causing serious problems for the St Pats defence and with 20 minutes gone in the second half, it was this combination which lead to Hickey being fouled in the box to win a penalty for the visitors. Captain Adam Byrne stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way and salvage a point for the League of Ireland newcomers.

With 20 minutes remaining, FC Carlow introduced Daragh Walshe who is just returning to full fitness following an injury he sustained against Shamrock Rovers. Daragh’s pace and movement was a threat for the Pats defence, but despite a couple of off target shots and an offside goal, he could not find what would have been an incredible winner. FC Carlow will certainly be lifted by this great comeback and will be eagerly awaiting the visit of Sporting Fingal next Sunday at 3pm in The Valley, Ballon.

FC Carlow: Jeff Moran, Alan Wren (Adam Doyle 30), Emmet Phelan, Adam Byrne, Jimmy Dermody, Andrew Hickey (Fran Hore 85), Craig Hore, Tomas Brennan (Daragh Walshe 70), Robbie Farrell, Cathal Coughlan, Neale Phelan. Subs not used: James Coleman, Shane Harris.

    Ciao
