Thanks, Saigon. Our greatest European result is only loosing 4-2 !
Norrkoping 5-0 Bohs and Ferencvasos (sp) 5-0 Bohs dispite a good draw at home.
The worst result for me was getting stuffed 4-0 by Cardiff City after a 0-0 at home.
It's one thing losing 8 or 10 or even 12-0 to one of the best teams in Europe, it's quite another losing out to Maltese opposition.
A decent Shels side losing to Hibs Malta was the worst for me, Zimbru is another obvious candidate.
In terms of most disappointing performances though 2 of the 4 great teams of the last 40 years- Rovers 4-in-a-row and Waterford 66-73- under performed in Europe.
You have to remember that the last tme we played in the European Cup, it really was that. We got to the last 16 in 1971 where we played Celtic but also Man Yoo in Lansdowne Road in front of 55,000+ in 1968 against Law, Charlton, Best and Stiles. A noticeable blooper along the way like Omonia. however we did redeem ourselves afterwards in the UEFA Cup against Gothenburg 79-80 (managed by Sven Goran Eriksson), CWC against Dynamo Tblisi 80-81 who went on to win it that year and Bordeaux in 86-87 who had among them Joel Bats, Alan Giresse, Jean Tigana and Luis Fernandez while we had Mick Bennett and 43 year old Al Finuane in our lineup.
Since then we havent played in Europe.
Rovers going out to Linfield in 84 was a big set back for the league
Pat's 10:0 agg loss was the one I remember as making me embarrassed to support the league. But, it seemed to embarrass the league teams into action aswell - i dont really think any LOI team has let themselves be outclassed like that since
