This is a weak and inadequate from Pat Fenlon - it's not disappointing it's simply unacceptable and Fenlon should say so!

"What we've done at this club before is that any problems we have in the dressing room are dealt with in the dressing room," said Fenlon.

Thats fair enough if the problem is in the dressing room - but this was on the pitch.

Would it be cyncial of me to think that Fenlon / Bohemians reactions are motivated by trying to avoid a ban, rather then a genuine recognition that racial abuse should not be tolerated.

agree Me myself I think he should get a year ban. this is not good for the league in any sort of way

You know, it's like a conversation I had once with Bald Student which was also pretty much spot on with regards to racism in football. I'm not going to say what it involved, because that would be a useful comment other people might be able to discuss and agree with or argue against.

Real Madrid centre back goes on the rampage last week & gets a 10 match ban.

Bohs player makes one stupid comment in the heat of the moment. He later apologies yet you think he deserves a one year ban.

    Apology from McGuinness:

    By Daniel McDonnell

    Friday May 01 2009

JASON McGUINNESS released a public apology yesterday ahead of his return to football tonight following the storm created by the racist comment he made towards Sligo's Romauld Boco.
The Bohemians defender was fined and suspended by his club for the incident and still faces a lengthy sanction from the FAI, but the Dubliner is in the frame for the meeting with Dundalk at Dalymount Park.
"I wish to confirm that I was involved in an incident," said McGuinness. "It is correct to say that I did use an unacceptable phrase during the course of the match. I sincerely regret making the comment and I have made an apology to Romauld, which I'm delighted to say he has accepted.
"I am aware that what I said was inexcusable, but by way of explanation I would point out that it was made in the heat of a hard-fought encounter and was a one-off occurrence.
"The incident has reinforced to me the importance of the 'Show Racism the Red Card' campaign and I am very anxious to get involved in this initiative to help stamp out all forms of racism in football and society.
"I hope people will accept this was completely out of character and that it has never happened before. I can confirm unequivocally that it will never happen again."
Meanwhile, Pat Fenlon expects a difficult challenge from a Dundalk side buoyed by their surprise success in Derry last week.
Tonight, Lilywhites boss Sean Connor and a host of ex-Gypsies return to Dalymount Park, with Fenlon having a rough idea what to expect after the opening day clash between the teams which he admits his side were fortunate to win.
"Their better results have been away from home maybe," said Fenlon. "We've had them watched and obviously we'll have a game plan when we play them, I don't want to go too much into that. We'll be prepared for whatever they do. They went to the Brandywell last week and had to defend for periods and won the game, so they are capable of doing it."
    - Daniel McDonnell

Right or wrong, at least he's being a man about it and coming out admitting that he was wrong and wants to put things right.

dont think he had any other option. althought i do agree this is a storm in a drinking vessel, any longterm ban would be inapproiate and would only serve to punish his dependents. a stretch helping out on ethnic diversaty projects would better a better option. then we can all go back to hating the real enemy them white ba@~#tds in abbotstown .... only joking

"Right or wrong" - are you seriously unsure about the morality of racial abuse?

I think that you are giving him too much credit for his 'manliness' in making a public statement.

If, as his been reported, the ref included his observations of racial abuse in his report, there is little anyone in his position could do other then this.

Of course he might be genuinely contrite, but the sceptic in me leaves me wondering.....

Can't believe that he started in the squad tonight TBH. Can't say it paints Bohs in a very favourable light IMO.

I'm as PC as it comes for a football fan, and I was shocked and disappointed etc when this happened, but i have to say i broke me hole laughing when McGuinness came on tonight and F&G started singing:

'Oh, Jayo, Jayo, you used to be a racist but you're alright now'

Thought Fenlon was a classier man than to have him back in the team already, his apology counts for very little in the circumstances as far as getting out of a punishment. Its good that he is apologising but he should still be punished just as heavily. And Bohs have shown their stance on racism by deciding that he only deserved to be suspended for the 1 game, I'd have thought he'd be dropped until the FAI decided his punishment.
Lets redefine what it means to heal

Fenlon, classier man. Fenlon has no class, never had and probably never will.

    5 match ban.

"The Independent Disciplinary Committee today found that Mr. Jason McGuinness subjected Mr. Romauld Boco to racial abuse during the match between Sligo Rovers and Bohemian FC on April 18th, 2009 and has imposed a 5 match suspension in accordance with FAI rules 73 and 89. The sanction is effective from May 20th, 2009."
I’m not pedantic...I’m merely overly concerned with minute details.

    nope. Absolutely none.
I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.
