    UCD lose Colours!!!!!!

    No really!!!

First time since 1984 or so. Lost 2-1 with the usual reserve/inters team out. Pat McWalter came on as a sub, but hardly any other first-teamers other than that.

This was pointed out to me by the head of football at Trinity, who was in the Montrose on Sunday and complained to me (jokingly of course) about the number of times we sang the Trinity SH!TE song! I pointed out that we'd only ever signed one decent player from Trinity - he even forgot who that was and all!

I can't be the only one who finds the whole Colours culture a pile of w*nk. The Trinity folk don't give a damn, and it reflects quite poorly on UCD that at the Colours debate etc. (unless things have changed) we do.

Some of the sporting ones are good craic - I played four or five hockey colours and they were great fun. I remember watching the men's first team's match - the last match of the day, with the result deciding the whole thing. We were going through the usual "Trinity! SH!TE!!!" for a while, before some Trinity lad scored and came over to us with his finger on his lips. He was promptly nearly knocked out by a barrage of half full beer cans! All in good nature of course!

I've always thought the debating seemed very puerile though - "That Trinity is a pile of [insert curse word here]". I don't think anybody really cares about the football one because of the obvious gap in standards.

Nearly all the sports have a colours. The Colours weekend is the main event each year for the orienteering club.

A friend of mine in Trinity pointed out the obvious absurdity of the fact that he was a Tipperary culchie from a hard left Gaeligoir family (and who was the national banjo champion), seen 364 days of the year as as Irish as the Lovely Girls festival and Cidona and yet at the colours debate he was called a West Brit W*nker.

The 1998 Lawsoc Colours debate was hilarious - not for the laboured UCD speeches but for the surreal Trinity speeches. For instance, one recited the lyrics to "Love Spreads" in a solemn, newsreader tone. Completely took the wind out the UCD sails.

I once spoke in a Colours debate, albeit a surreal one. The Phil and UCD Philosophy Society decided to hold a "proper" debate, about Nationalism. Unfortunately no one bothered telling the Trinners folk, who insulted us in a rather laid back way, while we made earnest points about the Nation State and Patriotism.
