He was 21 on Jan 1st. I don't think it takes a brain surgeon or even someone who claims to know anything about football to understand what Moyes is saying about Duffy.
Nevertheless, you can't resist reducing it to a negative

I see it through a realists eyes, or lets say as a neutral, non republic of Ireland supporter would see it. Not that I am, but you know what I mean.

Pseudo-realist would be a more accurate label, seeing as you are not yourself.

''I want to get back into the senior squad' - Ireland under-21 captain Shane Duffy': http://www.goal.com/en-ie/news/3942/...eland-under-21

Newly-appointed Ireland under-21 captain Shane Duffy has expressed his desire to stake a claim for a place in Giovanni Trapattoni's senior squad, but acknowledged that he needs to be playing regularly.

The 21-year-old Everton centre back was first involved with Trapattoni's team just under three years ago in May 2010 and was called up in February 2012 as a replacement for Richard Dunne, but has yet to make his senior debut for the Boys in Green.

"[Trapattoni] telephoned me before the Greece game in November, saying I needed regular games to get into the squad. Hopefully as soon as I’m getting matches on loan, I'll be in the senior squad," Duffy told the Irish Examiner.

"I'd come into the senior squad at 17 after I'd just changed over from Northern Ireland. It was the time I'd broken into the Everton team for the first team too, so the Ireland manager wanted to see me. That was a big step-up but I want to get back there as soon as I can."

The Toffees defender revealed that he had the chance to join Championship side Middlesbrough on loan at the beginning of the season, but was not allowed to leave Goodison Park, as David Moyes wanted to retain him as cover. However, he is hopeful of securing a move when the loan window reopens.

He said: "I had a chance to go to Middlesbrough at the start of the season but the manager needed me as cover because Tony Hibbert got injured.

"The loan window reopens this Thursday and I'll likely move to a Championship club then. I must have been on the Everton bench for 40 games this season!"

Meanwhile Ireland under-21 boss Noel King believes that the forthcoming game against the Netherlands will give him a 'good indication' of where his squad is at ahead of the qualification round for the 2015 Uefa Under-21 European Championships.

"It's a good match for us," King told the Irish Times. "It will give us a good indication of where we are although the draw was good for us in the sense that we have no games in March or June which means we'll get a few more friendlies under our belts before the qualifiers start against the autumn."

Republic of Ireland under-21s face the Netherlands in a friendly international at Tallaght Stadium on Wednesday February 6. Kick off 13.00 BST.
Duffy reckons he'll go on loan to a Championship club once the loan window reopens on Thursday.

Hopefully he does. Whatever he can do to convince Moyes that he can be thrown in in a league game he should do.

I'll repeat what I said in the Gibson thread. Should be Everton's backup CB. Heitinga has been pure poison this season, costing Everton goals nearly everytime he plays.

He's been pure poison for a long time. His breakthrough seems a long time ago.

Named new U21s captain. I guess that rules out a senior call-up!

On for the last two minutes of injury time as Everton hang at Oldham.

Well that plan backfired. He was brought on to compete with 6'6 Matt Smith but was outfought on a corner.

Duffy was brought on for the last two minutes of stoppage time in Everton's FA Cup game against Oldham away, but Everton ended up conceding from a corner with pretty much the last touch of the game. Ended 2-2.

    Gibson played the full game.

Perhaps Duffy got distracted by the bizarre sight of the Oldham goalkeeper in the mix for that last high ball, jumping up with his gloved hands outstretched trying to catch the ball. Typical of the modern keeper, he missed and the next Oldham player headed it in.

Harsh to blame Duffy, it was a great ball in and panic stations in the box.

If that happened in the PL, a free out wouldve been given. The Oldham keeper was very fortunate he didnt get a hand on the ball himself.

Shane Duffy in a spot of Twitter-related bother now: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-21830064

A Premiership footballer has denied responsibility for a message that appeared on his Twitter account, apparently in support of the IRA.

Shane Duffy, an Everton defender and Republic of Ireland international, said someone took his phone and retweeted the message without his knowledge.

The message appeared on his account during the earlier hours of Monday.

He later apologised for any offence caused and tweeted: "cant leave ur phone anywhere now!!" (sic).

Duffy, 21, is originally from County Londonderry.

As a teenager, he played for Northern Ireland at Under 16, 17, 19, and 21 level.

In February 2010, he switched his international allegiance to the Republic of Ireland.

The footballer has more than 48,000 followers on the micro-blogging site.

Later on Monday morning, Duffy reiterated his denials and said he was getting "abuse" from many Twitter users for something he did not do.

He posted: "The retweets and tweets was not me. Got to accept the hate. Really am sorry for this mess! Sorry guys!"

Everton FC has not yet made a comment on the matter.

It is not the first time a Republic of Ireland international has been involved in controversy on Twitter.

Last month, Duffy's Irish team-mate and fellow Derry native James McClean closed his Twitter account after a row over an Irish rebel song.

McClean, who plays for Sunderland AFC, named The Broad Black Brimmer by The Wolfe Tones as his favourite song.

The song tells the story of a boy whose father is killed fighting for the IRA.
It's drawn a lot of outrage on Twitter with PUP-member Phil Hamilton deciding to lodge a complaint to the Merseyside Police: https://twitter.com/P_Hamilton_PUP/s...24708350353410

I lodged a complaint to merseyside police concerning a tweet from Shane Duffy I and others affected by IRA violence needs answers

Wonder if Mr.Hamilton has the same concern over victims of loyalism and their collusion with the Brits on occasion?
