Maybe Sam is trying to convey the notion that Duffy was so passionate about making his debut for his beloved Northern Ireland that he became irate and frustrated when the opportunity didn't present itself?

That's a brilliant idea, ha! Apparently McClean sang Wild Rover. Shane "Buttercup" Duffy and James "The Wild Rover" McClean.

Poor piece, really. Rambles on about topics that he hasn't got a clue about. Lots of "I think..." - he's uncertain of his facts and he's got Duffy's debut wrong (debut was against AEK Athens in Greece).
The piece is more about the author than it is about Shane Duffy. And this man is getting paid to write for the Journal?

Aware that the photo says that.

Dominic's text, however, says this: "Shane Duffy made his debut in the Everton first team against Bate Borisov in the Europa Cup a few seasons back."

No "home debut". He's got it wrong.

It is his 'full debut' though since he started the game and played 90 mins. Agree that the sentence could do with this qualifier though.

"'Duffy's a great lad and he's going to be a good centre-back' - Everton defender Phil Jagielka": http://www.goal.com/en-ie/news/3942/...d-centre-back#

Everton defender Phil Jagielka has praised his team-mate Shane Duffy after the 20-year-old tied up a three-year deal with the Toffees.

England international Jagielka said that the Republic of Ireland under-21 international was among the team's best players when he made his Premier League debut in January against Tottenham Hostpur and that the new contract will help to 'settle him down'.

"Duffy's a great lad and he's going to be a good centre-back," Jagielka told evertonfc.com. "He obviously went out on loan and did really well and then we got a few injuries at the back and a few people weren't sure whether he'd be able to step up and handle it.

"But, fair play to him, I think he was up there amongst our best players in most of the games he played in."

Duffy has made just one appearance for the Goodison Park club this season, coming on as a substitute during the side's 5-1 Capital One Cup victory over Leyton Orient and Jagielka believes that he can continue to learn from the other defenders in the squad.

"It's nice for him to get a new contract and I think it will settle him down again. And the longer he stays around the squad hopefully learns from the rest of the defenders and the rest of the team.

"Hopefully that will turn him into a better player," concluded Jagielka.

Duffy went on loan to Burnley last season for a 28-day period with the option of an extension. He played the full 90 minutes in one game but they didn't extend the loan. Hopefully, he'll see more first-team action this time around if the loan deal goes through.
