    Bratislava

Has anyone been? Much to do?

Is it easy to get tickets on the gate for a league game?

went on a day trip there back in 94 when i was spending time in Vienna.

Got a huge steak and chips dinner for 20 of your old irish pence.
bought REM's Out of Time, a new release there at the time for 1 punt.

If youre into steak and chips or classic music albums i cant recommend the place highly enough.

Many of those who went to the Ireland game came back hating it. I thought it was kind of quirky. There's a decent restaurant on top of the Danube (I think it is?) in the shape of a UFO with a view over the whole city; decent food, English speaking staff and fairly cheap. Beer is about E1 tops. Some wierd (in a good way) statues around the centre of town. Standard enough castle too. Didn't go to a game there, but walked into a Slavia Prague game the following week; ground wasn't half full, and they won the league. Can't see you having any problems.

went for the ireland game a couple of years back
didnt find the locals very welcoming and it was lashing rain for most of the time i was there so didnt really enjoy it.
would like to go back and give it another go when there's not 1000s of football fans about tho.

I was there last summer and loved it. Cheap (strong) pilsner lager and friendly locals. What more could you want?

I was only there for the match last year and there was a very uneasy vibe about
the place. Although 1 security man told me they were expecting us to behave like the
English hooligans so they were up for a bit of zero tolerance.

Wouldnt mind heading back under holiday circumstances though to see what its really like.

That doesnt give you a reason not to smile and generally be civil. Wouldnt hurt to say thanks when they take your money including large tips.

Going from Bratislava to Prague was like travelling from East Germany to West Germany back in the 70s. Different mentality the Czechs, more Germanic than the Slovaks.
