The Stone Roses eponymous debut album was released 20 years ago in May.

I thought I'd take the liberty of starting a thread for all things Roses related - if there's no interest, it will die off of its own accord.

The inevitable cash-in seems to be at an already advanced stage with a John Leckie re-mastered version due to be released to coincide with the 20th anniversary.

Its rumoured that there may be some previously unreleased additional demo tracks added to the final box set release.

Years ago I heard the demo of "The Sun Still Shines" which didn't make the album - and it wouldn't have appeared too out of place on the finished album.

I'd be a bit dubious as to how much of any real worth is left as Silvertone would have released it years ago.

The Sun Still Shines is a great song and is still only available as a bootleg. It'd be worth another version/ box set just for that song, which could be why it's been held in reserve. There's also a couple of cool acoustic demo's.

I remember when the Very Best Of was out, they said they had turned down the bass on the original recordings as, so I wouldn't write off a remastered version just yet, although much of it already on The Very Best Of.

According to the NME article last month the album is expected to be released some time in June - typical of them.

My album is starting to skip, so I'm nearly due to buy yet another one. I'll probably just pick up the standard one, and see what comes of the box set.

Got into them relatively late and there's a question i've always wanted to ask... How come the singles So Young, Sally Cinnamon, What the World is Waiting For, One Love etc didnt make a studio album rather than a compilation.... Was it record company strife?

So Young and Sally Cinnamon were released well before the album, and were pre-Mani too. (So Young is a world away from a band that has found it's sound).Fool's Gold/What the world is waiting for was released after the album, later that year, and One Love the next year. It was around the time their troubles started with Silvertone.

They probably wouldn't have been put on a studio album anyway - this was still at a time where it wasn't strange to release non-album singles/e.p.s. Elephant Stone was another non-album single, released before the album.

All the other single releases/re-releases after the album, up to Love spreads, were just Silvertone cashing in.

Silverstone really have milked them dry, just how many compilations are there now??
I reckon this will be at least the 4th!!

Slightly O/T, I have a policy of buying classic albums for Nieces & Nephews, for their 18th Birthdays (I have 11 N&N's!!) it's always from the year of their birth so far there have been 4 lucky recipients

1982 Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen
1985 Hounds Of Love - Kate Bush
1986 The queen is dead - The smiths
1989 The stone roses - The Stone Roses

Of the 4 only the Stone Roses one has had any impact, the other 3 were soon on the bottom of the CD pile, in my defence I purposely went for albums to challenge their normal tastes, eg The Smiths was for my Nephew who is big into Chilli Peppers, Linkin Park type of stuff.

This year another nephew hits 18 so it's classic album from 1991 time...
He likes Hip Hop & Rap so I'm tempted by Ice T's OG but my heart says Primal scream - Screamadellica

According to research Nevermind was the bast album of that year. But go with Screamadelica. Or Loveless.


You're right about Silvertone - one of the reasons I'm finding it hard to get enthusiastic about this. Not messing with the classics is another. Although, to be fair it might be interesting to hear it re-mastered by John Leckie.

Yeah - even though the recording is only a Demo - Sun Still Shines is a catchy Roses tune in the mould of Mersey Paradise , Suger Spun Sister etc. It certainly precedes John Squires purhcase of the Led Zep song book.

Two other additional recordings from the 88 / 89 Sessions have been released. "I'm without Shoes" and "Groove - Black Magic Devil Woman".

Both appeared as limited edition releases on the Complete Stone Roses Compilation.

"I'm without Shoes" is one of their "backwards" recordings and "Groove" is pretty much the band jamming as oposed to a formal song (some good guitar work by John Squire in it though).

Both tracks are more for completists and/or Roses Anoraks only!!!

Silvertone released "Waterfall" as one of these additional cash-in singles. What amazes me is that "Where Angels Play" was the previously unreleased B-Side!!!!

I was never sure if WAP was not considered good enough for the eponymous album or whether it was being held back for the aborted 1990 / 1991 album!!!

Imagine how good that album would have been if they'd kept up the momentum!!

If you don't buy him A Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory I will



Seriously though if he likes hip hop and is just 17 he probably won't have that one and it's one that he will quickly realise is an essential listen

The best album from that year, (for me - any year), is U2's Achtung Baby, but then alot of households already have that album.

I'm pretty sure Leckie already remastered songs for The Very Best Of. For completeness, I probably will get it (or have it got for me). If they have, and then put out some of the demo's talked about early as an extra, I'll definitely get it (to replace my tape bootleg )

Chopping a song in half to make it fit (I can't think of any other reason) on the best of was a very sore point for me.
This is probably something I'll get round to getting, but I need to get the original album first.

Yeah I also noticed that in some juke boxes they cut out the whole instrumental at the end of Resurection ****es me off

It was one of the aforementioned Silvertone milking exercises. The short version of that and Fools Gold always wrecked my head, whatever about One Love (which at least was released before the row).
