AVG 8.00 Free -"General Error" problem

Anybody else using AVG 8.00 Free having this problem and can you recommend a fix?

Nature of problem: Update manager won't/can't install Updates. It tries but then a message that just reads "General Error" comes up. From research I've found that systems running Vista (I am not) get a message saying "General Error -Not enough Memory"

My machine is running Win2K and the message just reads "General Error"
" I wish to God that someone would be able to block out the voices in my head for five minutes, the voices that scream, over and over again: "Why do they come to me to die?"

"General error" is shorthand for "programmer should be shot".

If you've a firewall, turn it off for a minute and try to update AVG. (Don't forget to turn it back on.

    Failing that, reinstall the programme.
You can't spell failure without FAI

Replace it with Avast, set it to update automatically and turn the sounds off. Job done.

Same as that, sometimes it updated, sometimes it didn't. Usually on the 2nd attempt it did though.

I think its the auto update that fails. Manual seems to work. I would guess there is way of changing the update server but I am too lazy...
