However, the league average after week five last year was 1,727, which means crowds are down by an astonishing 20% on last year. Crowds are always higher at the start of the year, particularly in round 1. Comparing the week 5 numbers from this year with the final numbers from last year doesn't really tell us anything.

But your point is invalid, because of what John83 has noted. So far - compared to the same few games last year, which is vital - crowds are down, not up.
