Chronicles of Riddick. Great film. Sure, it dealt in broad strokes, but it looked spectacular and had a remarkable brooding, Shakespearean atmosphere. A world in which Star Wars is taken seriously and Riddick is considered kitsch is hard to understand.

Completely agree about Riddick - much vaster a canvas than a number of doughty trilogies. Dunno that many take Star Wars "seriously" - I'm a big fan, but for the sense of fun and adventure; Empire is well written and has some scope, but it is a popcorn film, and there is nothing wrong with that. I don't know about Riddick: I kind of enjoyed it, but I didn't think it really had any grand ideas in it. It's funny that you pick Dune to compare it to. Both Dune and The Matrix are classic hero's journeys. Dune's is told with truly epic scope that no one's captured in the various adaptations, and The Matrix was told with great cinematic style. Riddick just paints by the numbers, IMO.
However, I think the real reason people sit on it is that it takes a wonderfully effective sci-fi horror (Pitch Black) and turns the character from the dangerous outsider who the others need but can't trust into a banal action hero stereotype.

I cant remember who said it - but remember reading that the Tour of France is so hard that you could nearly excuse them all for using drugs, I mean hell they are cycling up the bloody alps!!!!
As I was a member of a cycling team myself I can def say it was the hardest sport i have ever tried - including athletics and cross country running
One of the main hangups i have about it though is that although i can run everyday i cant with cycling - its literally a pain in the ar se

Was just saying that this morning. Stayed in Dublin Friday night and went shopping and strolling yesterday in the glorious sunshine. Lunch in Powerscourt & shoe buying in Georges Street Arcade & strolling along Grafton Street. Agree, bliss!Dublin.
