Catcher in the Rye is a masterpiece. But for me at least, it took time to get to like it. I read it when I was 15 or so, and thought it was rubbish. Read it again a few years later and it seemed pretty good, and now I think it is superb. It is just an amazing description of cynicism born of isolation.

Christmas - the whole thing from start to finish is a colossal waste of time, energy, money and is a giant pain in the gulags from early november

There are no redeemable features - and yes I am a parent and no, the look on their faces is a false joy and lasts 15 seconds.

Steady on scrooge. Xmas starts a chain of enjoyable events such as the pub on Stephens' Day!

New Years Eve now there's a waste of time........it's just the clocks ticking over!

Well, allow me to retort - the pub on stephens day is not an event; it is a nascent location on a given random date on the calendar and is no different to a miserable tuesday in march, apart from the football and racing on, and loads of people off work - none of which has anything to do with christmas - it could be a busy saturday

I don't really mind Christmas either way but St. Stephen's Day is the one day in the year when you run into every gobsh1te in the pub that's home for Christmas etc and that you wouldn't care if you never saw again in your life!! Questions like "And what are you up to with yourself these days???"........etc etc, very tedious, and the only solution sadly is to drink more!!
The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.

80's nights, they're not ironic, they're not great fun, they're a waste of time.
