    Got an email back from ICTU;

    "Thanks for that. I’m afraid the date was decided by the Executive Council, as one that best suits all unions. I can see your problem…but maybe you should also mail govt and get them to start talking, regrds"

    Unfortunately the date was most likely planned because of the match and not by an unfortunate coincidence. This will mean extra publicity for the protest and extra pressure on the government.

    Brian Cowan has no interest in football AFAIK and has only shown interest in GAA and horse racing.

    I am scheduled to fly on the Monday and cannot go on the Sunday. I can still fly to Milan on the Tuesday and take my chances after that.

    I doubt it had anything to do with it, tbh. They'll be looking for a bigger impact than a few thousand football fans!

    SIPTU's balloting is finishing up Friday the 20th. I'd expect that result over the weekend. I don't know about other unions - a lot of them already have a mandate.

    Thing is, if the Government do reopen social partnership talks, any strike would be called off right up to the last minute.

    this is probably wishful thinking but can you cancel your flights to book new ones if there is nothing more than the threat of a strike?

    A few thousand football fans is a far bigger story than a few thousand businessmen. The media will lap this up with fans stranded.

    The bus strike was set for the day of the Ireland v England rugby International.

    This increases the impact and increases the exposure.

    Flying out of Dublin Tuesday morning with Aer Lingus so should be ok. Hopefully it won't go ahead.

    In the scheme of what will effectively be a general strike, I'd say the airport will only get a passing mention never mind football fans there.

    As long as the media dont go on strike

    I remember Malta 89, after spending days waiting for the fog to clear, we were told we would be on the 1st flight out of Dublin on the Weds if the fog lifted, however when morning came, the first flight (and only plane in the airport) was going to Heathrow After a heated argument and a bit of publicity on the radio, the london flight was cancelled, and hey presto we were on our way to Malta much to the delight oif the crew who got to the match and plied us with free drink all flight long, even giving us a few take aways!!

    Wouldn't plan on needing the services of anyone to get anywhere on either Monday 30th or Tuesday 31st. It's beginning to look like the intention is to shut the country down for at least a day. So unless you're being dropped to an airport privately and are sure your flight will go I'd start looking at Sunday.

    tried to call ICTU as they had their meeting this morning. Could not get through to anyone in the know. Left a voicemail, not sure that will do any good.

    Have most people booked alternative flights if the strike goes ahead on the Monday? It's looking likely now and I'm supposed to be heading to Milan Malpensa Monday evening. It's too expensive to go there on the Sunday so I'm looking at going to Milan Linate. Anyone else in the same boat?
