It's true but at the same time he has been one of our best performers and been at its best.

Lots of players underperforming under Martinez.he was raved about here by yes you guessed it....

Maybe he will get an FA cup winners medal, certainly has not been his best season at Everton.

I've always said I think that Martinez is suited to international management more than club management. He is good motivating for cup runs. But he just doesn't have it for the weekly grind. Everton were very good defensively under Moyes, and thats always been Martinez biggest problem.

I warned geysir he was an accident waiting to happen but...

Seriously, Martinez has a lot to learn to be a top-level coach. I'd say young players learn a lot under him. Not so much oul lads like McGeady.

It could also be said he's had two bad seasons out of nine as a club manager, maybe three if you include the relegation/cup win season.

Bar that Wigan cup win he's really only had two more decent cup runs, both this season with Everton, so I'm not sure how it forms the basis for something you've always said.

Looks like Seamie dodged a bullet by being injured. Still, despite a personal horror show at Anfield The Times reports City and Chelsea are set to do battle over Stones.

He is the most over-rated player i have seen in a long long time.

Deloresean go back over some of the stuff CD and I ping-ponged about Martinez, specifically about his defensive record, and about how he always seemed to be in or around the bottom half, or worse fighting relegation. The teams seemed to be able produce these great results one-off, but without consistency and most of these were in cups. They could easily ship 3 or 4 goals in a game. Thats coming back to haunt him again - as his teams GA record will show down through the years. Whatever was working for the players, isnt obviously working anymore.

Saying that his major flaw as a manager is his teams inability to defend very well is just stating the obvious. Even his biggest fans wouldn't deny that.

Of course he was in or around the bottom half or fighting relegation, he was managing Wigan ffs.

And of course your last sentence is correct, again though, stating the obvious.

You need more than great one-off results to make a good international manager by the way, just ask the Northern Ireland fans.

Ya but he has shown over the course of a few cup runs that he can acheive these results more consistenly in a cup type environment.

And you say its obvious now, but go back to when I brought this up a few years ago, it wasn't so obvious and it was argued against!

Like I said, two of his three good cup runs have come this season, so I don't understand how that formed the basis for something you've "always said". Not to worry though, we won't go around in circles.

Everybody knew that Wigan leaked a lot of goals. I can't imagine anybody denying this. I'm sure people gave a counter argument with regards the strengths of his teams also, if that's what you mean. Or maybe it was during his first season at Everton, when they defended quite well in general.

I'd categorise Wigan's remarkable late escape from relegation in the preceding season as a de facto cup run.

I think he's a good manager, or at least he has some good things going for him, but sometimes a manager gets stale at a club and it's time to move on.

I know what ye're saying but I wouldn't really agree. I think there was a very obvious difference when Wigan made that escape, the good form and confidence it brought facilitated the results. Many teams (seems like one every season!) have done that but I don't think it necessarily makes their managers more suitable for the international field.

A run of form and confidence hasn't applied to the actual cup runs, as the good results have been at times when the team haven't been playing well generally. Of course, cup runs are extremely draw dependent also. Producing results against lower league teams isn't really a sign of anything, and they would have made up a high percentage of the games. The one-off results thing does carry a bit of weight I suppose, but I think it's a bit harsh.

Even if Martinez is a manager who is only capable of producing one-off results, I still don't see why this would make him more suitable for international football, where consistency is just as important. And it's arguably even more important to be well organised and able to defend.
