'No evidence' of arson in Stardust fire

An independent examination of the evidence of the Stardust Victims Committee has rejected the finding of a 1981 inquiry that the fire was probably a result of arson.

The report said the original finding provoked anger and indignation among the survivors and recommended that the Government should correct the public record by acknowledging that there is no evidence the fire was started deliberately and that the cause was unknown.

In the event that this cannot be done, the report recommends that a further inquiry should be held for the limited purpose of establishing the cause of the fire.

Such an inquiry should be held in private without undue delay, the report recommends.

The report also concluded that a committee should be formed to monitor the progress of the victims and that the State should pay for counselling and medical treatment where necessary for the survivors and the bereaved.

There is a time when just need to leave things go. I don't see what calls for another inquiry will achieve. Not sure any reliable information can be determined so long after the event now.

I agree. Bu t its hard for the families to accept blame can't be apportioned. The report points out some damming things that should not be forgotten. The report states that had not the exits been blocked by bins, chairs, chained or “the white van” 1750 people could have escaped in 2.5 minutes. Yet the Butterly’s were able to receive £600,000 in compensation because of the verdict of probable arson.

Sorry mate, I understand what you are saying and although I am from that neck of the woods, I have no connection with any of the families, but that is precisely what governments do

They consistently delay inquiries, findings, solutions, investigations, reports, debates precisely to ensure that people let go

The 9/11 commission, the help for the 9/11 helpers, the Monaghan bombs, bloody sunday, the jfk thing, the 45 minute claim, dodgy dossier, all of the tribunals are specifically designed to firstly delay progress beyond elections and secondly to test the resolve of people impacted

It ios a national disgrace that this took so long and that the owners were recompensed with unseemly haste yet the dead peoples families waited almost 30 years for even this questionable sense of closure - despite having 2 Taoisigh in their constituency - utter disgrace - heads hung in shame across the divide

The lack of empathy and the ability to not give 2 craps about dead peopls families is utterly utterly staggering and verging on criminal
