Re NI, I would much prefer them to have beaten Slovakia than to have them losing so some Ireland fans can enjoy some spurious sense of superiority in a table of little relevance to real status. It would have been remarkable to have had both teams in the play offs.

It implies we'll be a 3rd seed. Now there may well be 7 or even 8 groups instead of 9.
Our last 2 games and 2 playoffs will count. It is early to speculate but a 3rd seeding looks likely.
The FIFA rankings were used last time for the world cup and will likely be used again.
were it to stay in the 9 team format edgar uses there, would a decent performance in the playoffs and remaining quualifers run us into second ?? bearing in mind scotland are stagnant now and hopefully bulgaria are too?

Pity draw for the Euro 2012 qualifiers will be made before June 2010.
Will be strange to be third seeds in the qualifiers after we win the the world cup.

Those rankings for Euro 2012 can't be right!If I remember, Bulgaria slipped into 2nd seeds just ahead of Ireland and Slovakia. Scotland have had a dismal campaign, as have Romania. I would imagine we have certainly overtaken Bulgaria and Scotland.

They had a much better campaign than us last time out.
Weighting is 20% 2006 campaign and 40% each for this campaign and Euro2008.
Anyway we have overtaken Scotland but not Bulgaria.

Remember the World Cup seedings are done on the FIFA rankings. European Championship seedings are done based on past 3 tournaments.
When is the Euro draw made? Can we get seeded second by then?
Euro draw takes place early in 2010
We have 2 games left in the group Qualifiers and if we progress we have 2 play off games. If the play offs are considered as part of the equation then we have a chance.
Romania would be the target.
If we have 3 wins or 2 wins and 2 draws, I think we would overtake Romania who should get 1 win.
The Euro draw is on 7 February.
If there are only seven groups as in Euro 08, then two of them will be outsize (ie 16 teams playing 14 matches). Sounds impractical to me.
Eight groups would likely mean that a couple of group runners-up (maybe from seven-team groups) would miss out.
Nine groups of five or six with the best runner up qualifying and the other eight into a play-off seems most likely?
The playoffs do count.
Slovakia could draw with Slovenia to qualify and lose in Poland so they are a target too but it is a longshot.
Referring to this seeding table, the assumption is "UEFA will use a qualifying system with six groups of six teams and three of five teams"
