So Gspain is allowed an "observation", even where it appears to discount the possibility of NI beating Slovakia, whereas when I allude to the possibility of ROI not winning next Tuesday, that makes my observation a "dig"?
P.S. When I typed "I'm not actually taking it for granted that we will beat the Slovaks", was that me having a "dig" at NI?![]()
GSpain's "observation" was simply to quote FIFA's probable rankings. Your gripe should be with FIFA, not GSpain. I'm not sure anyone could be arsed working out exactly where FIFA gets its outcomes from - for all I know it could be a bad result of ours in the past dropping out, or a good result of yours dropping out. Don't know, don't care to be honest.
Edit: just read through it on FIFA's website - it assumes an Ireland win, a Northern Ireland draw. Not my prediction, or Gspain's.

That's not a FIFA site btw Stutts.![]()
whatever, just saying that nobody here made any presumptions and yet EG's first contribution here in a while was to comment on our friendly record.
At least Eirebhoy found the right thread.
It's not a FIFA site as has been stated. However it is normally very accurate.
My understanding is that we will move ahead of Northern Ireland in the rankings irrespective of their game tonight. If Scotland beat Holland they will probably remain ahead of us.
I'm not presuming anything ands indeed hope NI do win tonight.
The rankings also take into account the downgrading of previous September results. These include our defeats v Czech 2007, Germany 2006, France 2005. These also include NI's wins v England 2005 & Spain 2006.
Anyway the site will most likely be updated tomorrow and will be better than my back of the envelope calculations.
It does appear to be a sore issue for you for Ireland to be ahead of NI on the FIFA table. Thats the second time you have mentioned being ahead of NI.
Would it not be better for us to take care of our games, if NI beat Slovakia we can possibly overtake Slovakia and climb into the 2nd seeds on the more important UEFA table? A NI victory could have a big value for us.
Is there a need for back of the envelope calculations?
In Edgar's predictive FIFA table, the past results which drop out have already been factored and the table just assumes the likely results in games not yet played.
The likely results are linked on another page.
No harm though to climb up the FIFA table and be in a good position if FIFA decide suddenly to use them for something like the play offs (only if it supports their desires).
Well Ireland did they bit last night but to move to 28th placed - other result have to go they way like Scotland losing (i dont want this to happen) and N Ireland drawing (again want them to win). i thought Ghana didnt have a game but they play a friendly against Japan and lost 4-3 - Edgar will this result count towards the rankings, if it does, do they go below Ireland cause they suppose to be 26th placed
All results count
As Ghana were supposed to draw probable results, they will be worse off in the real table.
Imo you're out of order on a number of counts here, S88.
First, it was Edgar's (excellent) site, not FIFA's.
Second, his site his alternative rankings are based on predictions, namely that ROI would beat SA and NI draw with Slovakia. And whilst each of these is reasonable, neither is guaranteed.
Third, Gspain seems (erroneously) to have presumed that an ROI victory over SA would see them rise above ROI in the FIFA rankings, regardless of how we did against Slovakia.
On which basis, everything I posted was either factual (i.e. querying Gspain's error over the effect of an NI victory), or opinion (i.e. that ROI might not beat SA).
Regarding this latter, you might consider it to have been a bit of a "dig" by me. However I feel that that smacks of premature offence, even mild paranoia on your part, since it was hardly an outrageous suggestion - at least no more than my other opinion that we might not beat Slovakia this evening*. Unless, of course, you simply don't feel I should be allowed to express an opinion at all...
P.S. I don't actually want, never mind need, a response by you to this post, if for no other reason than that it all must be boring the arse of other readers.
* - Or was that opinion a "dig" by me against NI?![]()
If we are good enough - we should get 4pts in last 2 games and thus be in the playoffs - as it has work out - we need only 2pts so love them to have a real go at italy now - but it will be a draw
Edgar - are we still 28th spot or have we move up 1/2 spots? i'm curious - Ghana loss and Denmark drew ......![]()
I'll respond anyway EG.
As I said above, the reason I interpreted it as a dig was simply because somebody posted that we "could" overtake NI if we beat SA. Nobody made any presumptions whatsoever. You hadn't commented on anything on this section of our site for a while but all of a sudden you drop in unable to resist pointing out that our friendly record of late has been pretty crap. That's why I took it as a dig. You say it wasn't intended as such so I'm perfectly happy to accept that it wasn't.
I'm surprised at your reaction to be honest as I like to think that I've never been anything other than fair in my interaction with you and your fellow NI supporters in this site
I doubt (hope) that neither gspain nor Edgar think I was out of order for misidentifying the source of the information and predictions.
Football fan takes interest in being ranked above neighbours - SHOCK HORROR!!!!
The FIFA rankings count for World Cup qualifying seedings. They actually do matter. Apparently they won't be used for playoff seeding.
I have been following the Euro2012 seedings btw and it got a good discussion in the car back from Limerick the other night but it is unlikely we'll make 2nd seeds although 2 wins and a good playoff might do it. However at this stage there are too many variables. Frankly I can also take an interest in whatever I like but nice to see you take such an interest in my posts.
Well? What does the table look like?
