    Pete Mahon resigns from UCDD

    From the FAI:

UCD AFC and Pete Mahon joint press release

UCD soccer club and Pete Mahon announced today that they have parted company by mutual agreement.

Club Secretary Dick Shakespere said, "Pete has made an enormous contribution to the development and stability of this club over the last five years or so. We were unable to agree with Pete's plans for this season and regrettably we agreed to part company. We thank him for his contribution and we are very sorry that he will no longer be with us. We also respect Pete's decision and will continue to have an excellent relationship with him."

Pete Mahon said, "I am disappointed to leave UCD. It is a club with great foundations and I am happy to have played my role in the development of young players at the club. I wish them every success for the future."

Martin Russell has been appointed as caretaker manager for the immediate term.

There will be no further comment.

I have always admired what he has done with UCD especially with such a limited budget. UCD have always been a good footballing team. C'mon city heres a manager perfect for us.

Not really. We're back training tonight, so I'd say Pete (and everyone who was offered a new contract) was given until today to decide on their futures.

Best of luck wherever he ends up (would be perfect for Cork). Martin Russell was A Team manager, so we've got nice continuity there if (as I expect) he is the next manager. Was being primed for the job anyway.

Mods - can you move this to the UCD section?

Hope Rusty gets it - he's a top bloke and a good coach.

He's also in charge of the Academy at UCD.

Should a potential new manager not be the one deciding who was offered a contract if Mahon wasn't definitely going to be the manager?

Mahon in charge of an adult team would be disastrous.

Paul Somers was A team manager and would be a better man for the manager's job.

Pity. He's served us so well. I guess it had to happen eventually. He deserves to manage a big team again, not that there are any of those left.

Where did you hear that from?
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

Sorry; meant to say the management were all offered new contracts at the end of last season. I think after that, we either let players go or say we'll talk to them in January when training starts back.

Rusty's a good coach and a very decent guy. will probably have to develop a meaner streak tho if he becomes the mgr of the first team.
He is employed by the College already, looking after all the soccer scholarhips, is he not?
Pete mahon done great things at ucd IMO. top top mgr and very honest in his assessments post match

    Head of the academy apparently.

Announcement expceted by the end of the week. I'd say it's Martin's if he wants it.

Either I'm very confused as to what you're talking about, or that seems very strange practice from UCD. Does that mean to say that the club has been at nothing since November, while waiting for Mahon to decide on a contract?

A budget has been established and presumably licencing dealt with, but yeah, pretty much. This is how a semi pro club with mostly 1 year contracts operates. We're partly protected from having to keep everyone under contract by the compensation due for young players who move. With a smaller budget this year, we don't have the money to aggressively recruit new senior players, and most youth players are signed in the summer, so what else is there to do?
You can't spell failure without FAI
