Alan Maybury played for leeds. Don't know if he scored
I might be forgetting somebody obvious ... but:
Is Damien Duff the first Dub to play (and score) in the Champions League?

You'd think there would have been one before now. Ian Harte is the closest to Dublin player to score a Champions League goal before now.
There's been more goals scored by Cork men.
Don't know about the Champion League in the modern sense, but surely Brady played in the European Cup. And didn't Robbie get a CL qualifier or two for Inter? Didn't score anyway.
You can't spell failure without FAI
Plenty of Dubs have played in the European Cup: Moran, McGrath. Even the League of Ireland players have played European Cup. Not too many have played Champions League though.
I was just thinking of the modern champions league.
So - nice one Dodge for Alan Maybury - would never have thought of that one. Not so sure about Robbie however.
Didn't Keane miss out on Leeds run that year as he played in the qualifying rounds for Inter?Originally posted by fergalr

Yeah played in the qualifying round
Effenberg played like my grandmother!
Neither Moran or MacGrath played in the EC.Originally posted by finlma

MaCGrath never won the league during his career and Moran won it late on in his career with BlackBurn I think but didn't play in the CL.
If you are talking of the European Cup rather than the Champions League then Liam Whelan played for Utd and was killed in the Munich crash.
Glen Crowe?? Or is this just the group stages?Originally posted by fergalr

We're not arrogant, we're just better.
I was just thinking of the post 1992 Champions League proper (ie not including qualifiying rounds).Originally posted by Schumi

So off the top of my head, ones that have played include Duff, Roy Keane, O'Shea, Given, O'Brien, Miller, Garry Kelly, Harte, McPhail(?), Maybury.
Of these only Duff and Maybury are Dubs.
There must be more .....?
Denis Irwin would have played as well wouldn't he?

He did.Originally posted by Schumi

I'm sure Keith Gillespie would've made an appearance or two for United too.
Did McPhail play for Leeds in the CL at any stage?
Maybe Ritchie Partridge at Liverpool?
And stay out of Bumtown, ya no talent bum.
Houllier seemed reluctant to play an attacking player in Europe. Partrige hardly got a look in the Worthington Cup, never mind the european one.Originally posted by UCD_4_Life

The only Irish players I can think of to have scored in the Champions League group stages are:
Roy Keane
Ian Harte
Damian Duff
Surely there are more????
Don't think so.
BTW David Connolly also played in the CL for Feyernoord

Also Irwin used to take penalties for Man U didn't he?
Assuming so it would be a little surprising if he never scored.
Maybe Man U were never award a penalty in the competion
when he was playing or maybe someone else took them
or maybe he missed them (all!)?
Or maybe I am confusing him with Ian Harte for some reason
(taking penalties for Ireland), but I think I am right.
Maybe i will have to do some searching on google etc..
I seem to remember Liam Miller scored for Celtic in the C. L.
against Anderlect a few days ago, although he is from Cork
I think.
Well I did some googling.
Denis Irwin scored the Man U's 200th goal in the European Cup/Champions
League against Anderlecht.
He also made a club record 50 appearances in the competition,
so he probably got a few more.
(Info maybe slightly out of date).
He is also, like Liam Miller, from Cork. A good sign perhaps?
Its quite a coincidence that both goals I found were against
Anderlecht and both by players born in Cork!!!
Incidently my dad is from Cork!!!
Although he never scored against Anderlecht, or indeed played
football with anyone of any significance - apart from me - as a child.
I seem to remember he wasn't particularly too good then.
He had a slight weight problem! (A bit like Ian Harte!!).
