Galway United manager Jeff Kenna and former Waterford manager Gareth Cronin are believed to be the other front-runners.

Jeff Kenna looks the front-runner to occupy the Dundalk managerial post, but another possible late entrant into the race holds impressive credentials and may yet win the vote of the board. John Gill, who guided the team to the Premier Division in dramatic circumstances, is still a contender, according to wellplaced sources, as the club was surprised by the number of applicants for the job.

Kenna from the outset was fancied as a leading contender if he decided to go for the position. He was on holidays, and seemingly has allowed his name go on the list.

He was expected to be interviewed yesterday ( Tuesday) and depending on how discussions went the 38-year-old, who was 27 times capped at senior level for Ireland, could be put in charge next season. Dundalk hope to make an announcement on Thursday or Friday.

Kenna received widespread acclaim for keeping Galway United in the Premier Division, amidst their financial troubles this season. He and former Sligo Rovers and Bohemians manager, Sean Connor were the ones over the last number of days tipped to succeed Gill.

Kenna seemingly was the one favoured, but the unidentified latecomer could change how the board are thinking.

Stephen Henderson, another of the bright young managers in the league, who quit Cobh Ramblers, is not thought to have been interviewed, nor were former players Roddy Collins and John Ryan.

The board interviewed a total of six candidates up to yesterday, and were planning to hold a further interview with Kenna, and possibly one other before drawing up a shortlist of three candidates from which they will make their choice.

Dundalk CEO Gerry Matthews has laid down the twin criteria to land an established manager - one who will gain results, and also drive forward the club's ambitious youth policy which involves building a multi-million euro complex, the structure of which is planned to be completed next summer.

The board will decide on whether to make a full-time or part-time appointment, which will depend on the chosen candidate and on what basis he can do the job.

App richardson is still in the running!!

Former Shamrock Rovers manager Pat Scully is no longer in the running to take up the role as Dundalk boss for the 2009 season.

Scully was seen as the early favourite to succeed John Gill, whose contract at Oriel Park has not been renewed.

Gill remains in contention to earn a new deal as one of four managers short-listed – but according to a report in the Dundalk Democrat, Scully is not part of that process.

Galway United manager Jeff Kenna, former Sligo Rovers and Bohemians chief Sean Connor and League and Cup-winning former Cork City boss Damien Richardson are all reputed to be in the running to land the Lilywhites job.

Nothing concrete, most people saying Kenna has it and Connor is the second choice.

Most bizare moment was when some nut case in the crowd started rambling about helping the other "Wee County" club by arranging a friendly with Drogheda...blank faces and no reply to that one!!!

I am very excited about the new season now,and perspective new signings, some which Sean said would not have been seen on these shores before!!
