Limerick - The Sporting Capital of Ireland?
Calling on all Sportsmen and Clubs in the County to Help retain League of Ireland Football in Limerick
Limerick FC are holding a Golf Classic in Limerick County Golf Club on Thursday 6th, Friday 7th and Saturday 8th of November in a drive to raise funds to keep the present team of players together for the remainder of the 2003/04 season.
Joe Collopy, who is a stalwart member of Young Munsters and a founder member of Austins Golfing Society, informed Gerry McKeon (General Manager of Limerick County Golf Club) of the critical financial situation in Limerick FC and Joe offered to help in organising any venture that would raise funds to help alleviate Limerick FC’s financial burden.
Both Joe and Gerry were one of thousands that enjoyed many happy Sundays in the Markets Field listening to the band of “ball-hoppers” led at the time by the great Mick Crowe.
Gerry on hearing of the dire financial straits that Limerick FC are currently experiencing contacted the club with an offer to help by providing the Limerick County Golf Course and the relevant back-up support needed to attract at least 60 teams for a Team of Four Competition.
With the entry at a very reasonable €80 per player, Limerick FC could net up to €10,000 from the event if the target of 60 teams is achieved.
Donal McSweeney, the PGA Professional in Limerick County, is sourcing a quality array of prizes, including golf equipment. Burgers will also be served at the 10th tee.
John Purcell (Limerick FC Commercial Manager) and Ralph McMahon (Club PRO) are hoping that sportsmen from all codes in the city and county will support this one-off drive to raise vital funds to ensure that Limerick’s long tradition as part of league of Ireland football will survive in the City.
You can book in a team by calling Sara (Limerick County Golf Club) at 061-351881, or by contacting either John Purcell or Ralph McMahon at Limerick FC.
