Bohs players asked to take 30% wage cut:

The players, meanwhile, were up in arms yesterday after they were asked to take a 30pc wage cut just days after they sealed an historic double by beating Derry in a dramatic FAI Ford Cup final.
It is understood captain Owen Heary met the rest of the squad on Wednesday night to discuss the wage cut but there was unhappiness amongst the players, not only over the request itself, but also regarding the fact that no board members were present to discuss the proposal.
PFAI General Secretary Stephen McGuinness said last night: "Any cut on players' wages has to be fully justified but players are meeting board members (last night) to find out the details and I will be meeting Gerry Conway (today).
"Cuts have been taken by players in the league this season to help clubs from going out of existence but taking a cut to allow other players to be signed for the club involved is going to be a very hard sell for these players."

Some people on here need to do a basic economics course.

The valuation of anything is affected not only by previous transaction values but also by the liquidity position of the seller.

In plain English, if you need the money quickly, you rarely get anywhere near what you would if you wait for the right offer to come along.

EL clubs are almost always in this situation, they need the cash to keep the clubs going therefore they rarely are in a strong bargaining position when dealing with British clubs who have a cash reserve.

From my reading Bohs need the money, everyone knows they need the money, therefore they have just created a firesale.

On balance, I am inclined to prefer the evidence of Mr. Conroy on this issue. Mr. Conroy was undoubtedly well disposed towards Bohemians at this time. Moreover, Bohemians’ need at this point in time was greater than Albion’s need. Bohemians were very short of money. As against that, although Albion did need the continued support of Bohemians for their proposed redevelopment of the Phibsboro Shopping Centre, they were already holding a letter from Bohemians addressed to the Planning Authorities indicating that Bohemians were supporting the project. While in theory Bohemians could have withdrawn the letter they had no commercial grounds, or other good grounds, for doing so at the time.

Got to wonder why they are continuing with an appeal? Seems like Bohs in so much trouble they are trying to roll the dice on another attempt to win the case as not much to lose at this stage.

Clause in Murphys contract is bizarre.

Not really. Plenty of players/managers have clauses such as these in contracts. Stephen Kenny's move to Dunfermline for example.

Murphy's contract was up a year ago and he signed a 2 year extension. It was a gamble that may or may not pay off to allow the clause but if he goes nowhere by Sunday week we have him for one more year or else we get a fee for him.

Yes, they're still the same. There's no sign that Bohs haven't honoured contracts, but yes, they're obliged to or they'll be in trouble - both from players who can walk for breech of contract and from licensing, who demand no unpaid wages.

Unless they succeed in the renegotiation, Bohs will have to sell or release players before they'll stay under the wage cup next year. This looks like a big headache for them.

Anyone remember which clubs have a lot of players on contracts which run over the closed season? Those clubs will all be manoeuvring franticly.

Add in the €400K or so in prize money that they've just won this season plus a minimum of €100K from UEFA for qualifying for the Champions League competition and the potential earnings in the Setanta Sports Cup and you're getting closer to the difference.

Financial strife sees Fenlon struggle to hold on to players

Bohemians boss Pat Fenlon admits that he fears the quick break-up of his double-winning side due to the financial situation at Dalymount Park.

The Gypsies have finished one of the best seasons in the club's history by winning the league title, with a record points haul, and the FAI Cup. But it's likely that many of the faces who helped the Dublin side win the double won't be around next term.

And the Bohs board, currently facing difficulties with two potentially expensive court cases, could also have a battle on their hands to keep Fenlon at the club as the Dubliner, who has managed four of the last six Premier Division title-winning sides, could be forced to quit due to frustrations over the financial situation at the club and in the league overall.

Bohs have nine players out of contract, while Lithuanian Mindaugas Kalonas has departed to find a club outside Ireland, and John Paul Kelly and Harpal Singh have been released.

Fenlon is keen to sign up some of the remaining six players who are out of contract but Bohs are forcing through cutbacks to deal with their mounting debt -- a debt which could grow if a court case relating to the dismissal of former manager Sean Connor goes against them tomorrow.

The Bohs boss is not in a position to offer new deals to those out-of-contract players or to bring in fresh faces, while those currently signed up with Bohs have rejected a proposal from the club's board to take a 30pc pay cut.

Fenlon returned to work over the weekend after a brief holiday but the former Shelbourne boss admits he is likely to see a mass exodus of players from a squad which will be very small next season.

"The club have said that we don't have the money to re-sign players who are out of contract or to bring in new players, it's as simple as that.

"At the moment we have 11 senior players under contract and two young lads, and there is no sign of that situation changing due to the financial circumstances. The players have said 'no' to the idea of a wage cut and I can't blame them for that, they signed contract with the club and they expect those contracts to be honoured.

"We have a lot of players from the current squad out of contract, I can't keep them all but I would like to keep a couple of them, but at the moment my hands are tied," Fenlon added.

Gary Deegan is also expected to follow Kalonas abroad, with West Brom keen on Kalonas, while Stoke City are offering a trial to Deegan.

Liam Burns, Stephen O'Donnell, Thomas Heary, Brendan McGill and Chris Konopka are out of contract and the club will not be able to offer them new deals, in the short term at least.

Youngsters Sean Byrne, Paddy Madden and Brian McCarthy all featured for the Gypsies' first team last season and it's likely that the club will have to rely heavily on them next season if the finance is not in place to bring in seasoned professionals for the defence of the league title and their Champions League campaign.

The Bohs board will have to work hard to keep Fenlon at the club, especially as Shamrock Rovers currently have a managerial vacancy.
