    Hmmm.

I've said all along I will not second guess Trap while the results keep coming, and a friendly result (unless its an unmerciful trouncing) will not affect this at all.

Having said that - I really, really hope he knows what he's doing. Because this squad - on paper - is balls.

However, we are second in our group and while we stay there, I'm happy. The next qualifiers are massive and I maintain that this guy knows his stuff, and we should trust him - WHILE the results keep coming.

    Joke. End of.

Andy Reid, Noel Hunt, McCarthy & O'Toole were all worth a look.

    Goalkeepers
    Shay Given Newcastle United 20/04/1976
    Dean Kiely West Brom 10/10/1970
    Joe Murphy Scunthorpe United 21/08/1981

    Defenders
    Paul McShane (Hull City)
    John O'Shea (Manchester United)
    Richard Dunne (Manchester City)
    Kevin Kilbane (Wigan Athletic)
    Alex Bruce (Ipswich Town)
    Damien Delaney (QPR)
    Kevin Foley (Wolves)

    Midfielders
    Aiden McGeady (Glasgow Celtic)
    Keith Andrews (Blackburn Rovers)
    Darron Gibson (Manchester United)
    Glenn Whelan (Stoke City)
    Damien Duff (Newcastle United)
    Stephen Hunt (Reading)
    Liam Miller (Sunderland)
    Andy Keogh (Wolves)

    Forwards
    Robbie Keane (Liverpool)
    Kevin Doyle (Reading)
    Anthony Stokes (Sheffield United)
    Caleb Folan (Hull City)
    Shane Long (Reading)

The players I have highlighted in bold are not regulars for their respective teams. What message does it send out to the players in form like Noel Hunt if they cannot even make a friendly squad? This squad should not be about giving more caps to the senior players but a chance to blood in youngsters in an environment which will not cost us points in important WC qualifying games.

No way Shane Long should be ahead of Noel Hunt at present!

How much influence had the FAI in the squad picking?...i.e. Trap possibily having his arm twisted to play a strong squad/team to ensure sufficient tickets are sold?

    When's the next B game?

That seems to be the only way of breaking into the squad. Club form obviously counts for nothing, Trap seems to be just interested in seeing them up close and making a decision that way.

You have to question the role of Brady and the other members of the backroom team and scouting network at this stage. Do they have any influence at all?

Surely picking some exciting new players will sell more tickets than picking Liam Miller and Shane Long again and again and again...

Have to say very disappointing. Reid seems to be the new Dave O’Leary.

We're 2nd but how much of that is down to Tapp having our best players availible... Lets say this

    Trapp knows his football..

    Trapp knows his best 11..

I will question anything beyond that to be honest...
I pity the fool!.... But suggest ways that he might improve himself.

Shocking, abject, regressive, complacent, unimaginative, demoralising, bankrupt.

There are two concusions that can be drawn from this slection.

For some players it doesn't matter how badly you perform for Ireland or how little football you get for your club, your place in the squad is absolutely assured (Miller, Long, Keogh, Whelan, Bruce, Stokes)

For others, no matter how well you play for your club or how much ability and promise you have you're not going to get picked (Garvan, McCann, St Ledger, O'Toole, N. Hunt)

We will be badly found out in this group sooner or later. We are relying on players who are manifestly not good enough and failing to encourage and develop talented players who in IMO (and - more significantly- that of their current club managers and a few Premiership managers bedides)d are better long term international prospects. I dont even think you can have confidence that Trapp is making an informed judement about the merits of some of the cutrrent players over those who have been left out. I dont think that he has seen the likes of McCann, O'Toole, St Ledger play. This would have been a great, and probably our last, opportunity to see what they had to offer. It's been squandered.

I think Andy Reid not in the squad is very disappointing. I feel sorry for Andy He should be here ahead of Liam Miller. Noel Hunt should be in instead of Shane Long.

    Changes I would make

Andy Reid in Liam Miller out

Lee Carsley in Darren Gibson out

Rory Delap in Alex Bruce out

Noel Hunt in Shane Long out

Mc Cann/Garvan/Mc Carthy in Andy Keogh out

Yeah Miller in there ahead of Reid is the most shocking of the selections. Ditto Alex Bruce ahead of either StLedger or Paddy McCarthy, oh and Shane Long and Stokes ahead of N. Hunt...

you would wonder what (if any) scouting system is in place for the Championship...it really is time to have a look at our promising youngsters plying their trade there. Traps management team seem to be unaware of guys like Garvan, McCann, O'Toole etc....

Disappointed in the squad selection, but not too surprised.
I didn't really think Jamie McCarthy would get in, after his recent commitment to Ireland.
Despite Reid's performance at the weekend, he hasn't been playing for Sunderland at all, people are saying Gibson, Whelan, etc shouldn't be in the squad because of their club form, but Reid should because...??

It does look like Trapattoni has his favourite players, starting XI and tactics. So far it's worked, but as soon as the first loss happens, it will be the rod they use to beat him with

Still seething about this. It's incomprehensible and clearly indicates that our Championship players are not being watched or scouted. It's been said before but most posters on this site seems better informed about our playing pool than Brady, Trapp and Tardelli. I know its futile but I am going to write to Brady as I cant wait to hear the justification for the current selection policy. I know I probably wong get a reply, but perhaps if they get enough stick over this they might actually start going to watch some of these players.

Gibson has never really been a first team regular and Andy Reid has. I have no problem with Kilbane being in the squad even though he is not playing week in week out because we know what he can do.

To put it this way I think its understandable that a senior player is in the squad but not playing week in week out with his club but it does not make sense if a young player is in the sqaud when he is not playing and there is up to about 10 other players who are.

You should have to earn to be in the squad and that should be past performances for your country. Current performances for your club and attitude and performances in training.

No Noel Hunt or James McCarthy or Eoin Garvan.

Trying to be Devils Advocate on the squad choice - I'd imagine Trapp's response would be that he is employed to achieve qualification for 2010 and not to overly experiment and "build for the future" on a continuous basis.

Trapp is dealing with the here and now and this dictates that he uses the majority of his favoured team at every given opportunity. This fosters a familiarity with formations and a team spirit.

He may well not be using this game to experiment - but as match practice for the established players.

This squad suggests that the friendly will be used to maintain the momentum that this specific group of players have contributed to since the campaign began.

I'd like to have seen the likes of McCarthy, Delap, St Ledger etc etc but I think the wholesale changes could be introduced at a more staggered pace to what we are used to.

I would not be in favour of wholesale changes or widespread experimentation. That is why that Darron Gibson should not be in the squad and would contradict why Keith Andrews is in the squad. I do not think that Carsley or Delap would be gambles or Andy Reid either.
