Like back in the day, Dundalk would have had fans travel from Belfast, Dublin and even the UK.

Attendances were around the 10,000 mark I think

Apart from facilities. Oriel is a disgrace. St Colmans is far nicer.

Anyway, the last time Dundalk were in the premier their attendances were appaling so glad to see they've turned it round. I hope they don't take anythign for granted though as its easier to support a winning side, regardless of division

How is Oriel a disgrace? New roof on the main stand, new stand over the far side, two bars/conferencing facilites, outside beer terrace, brand new changing rooms and shower facilities, referees rooms, female referees rooms, medical room, drug testing rooms, physio offices, youth development centre being started.

It's a while since you've been in Oriel then??

The changing rooms in Oriel are nothing to write home about!

Was there at the start of last season. Medical rooms mean nothing to most fans.

In terms of spectator facilities its below par

Will likely be upgraded before the start of the season. Before last season, Gerry Matthews the CEO knocked down the old shed and built a brand new stand in the space of 4 days so anything is possible

As much as I love Oriel it does need an upgrade. my guess would be that it isn't quite pleasant for visiting away fans and they have no shelter from the elements and for those of you who know Oriel is probably the coldest place in dundalk.
Rome wasn't built in a day though.

In terms of numbers relative to the town's population, I'd say we are the best supported team in the country.

Dundalk's population is only 35085, their av. attendance last season was 1,406, that's a 4% turnout rate

Compare that to Derry and Cork.

    Derry's population is 83,652, their average attendance was 2,614, that's a 3% turnout rate

Cork has a population of 119,143, thir average attendance was 2,897, a turnout rate of only 1.5%

Therefore Dundalk is statistically the best supported club in Ireland.

AND THOSE ARE FIRST DIVISION ATTENDANCE FIGURES!!!!!
Actually Harps and Ballyboffey are probably, we are aloso better population : Avg Crowd ratio than Dundalk

Correct. Population of Ballybofey around 3,300. Average attendance 2007 was 1,164, or 35% of population. average attendance 2008 was 1,607, or 48% of the population, compared to Dundalk's 5% or whatever. That poster is talking garbage.

Do you wear a blindfold when you go to Richmond Park??

Before we all get carried away, yes Dundalk made a small profit last year, but it was indeed helped on that lge winning prize (50k not 100k Stu) but we also have to bear in mind, was it not for the owner personally taking on the aged debt of 400k (or so) and paying this himself, we would be up the creek like many other clubs.

Fortunately, all the money we raise from both bars, pitch rental, gate receipts (around 20k a game towards the end of last season) and other well organised and consistent fund raising can go 100% towards the team and weekly bills.

So yes we are wll run and financially sound, but if Matthews hadnt taken on that debt.........who knows

His business plan from the start was simple, if he could see the club increase their revenue and run all sections soundly, he would step in from time to time and inject some of his own money, but from what i have heard, things have been taken care of themselves since 18 mths ago and its a case of living within means.

Attendances are key though, any drop would naturally effect cash flow, so we`ll see how things pan out in the premier. No more 6 + 7-0 goal fest here !

Our away section needs urgent improvements, there is no question about that, also more seating would be nice aroudn the ground.

Other than that, I think you`re comment is way off the mark

Nope, but I don't go round saying St Colmans is a kip and that Pats "tick all the boxes"

20 years ago Oriel was one of the better grounds in the country. Now its in a sad state (the excellent bars excepted). Obviously I'm talking from an away fans pespective. As I said, glad to hear its to be upgraded

It's a bit worrying only having enough players to make up a 5-a-side team..
