'before the devil knows you're dead' - pretty engaging thriller, quite dark, grim, not too bloody and has some good performances. p. seymour hoffman is the main man at the minute for me, i could literally watch him doing nothing. ethan hawke's level was up from what i've seen him in previously and the rest of the supporting cast were decent. also caught 'network' on turner classic movies recently. fantastic, prescient film about the gutter-politics of television and its pervasively (and perverse) global influence. some great rants about the nature of the almighty dollar vs. the foolish naievety of the socially conscious, and some meta-narrative(?) stuff where william holden's character critiques his ex-lover's (faye dunaway) unfeeling, televisual characteristics. great film, really surprised me.

The FX guys should win an oscar though...Brad Pit as a 4 foot old man was brilliantly done.

Cinderella Man Boxer J Craddock rises again to set up a world title fight with the awesome Max Beaur. Not a bad movie, but Im a little taken aback - a boxing movie with a nice ending - surely thats a bit of a no - no!!!!!

Revolutionary Road: Awful, really didn't enjoy it. It was like watching a very earnest play. It was over acting from the "we're going to win an Oscar for this" school. DiCaprio was miscast, Kate Winslett was good in parts but the whole thing was nowhere near as good as it's being made out to be. Real "Oscars-by-numbers" stuff.
    2/5

Been let down by The Reader and Revolutionary Road in the last couple of weeks, think I've had my fill of Miss Winslett for a while. Here's hoping Frost/Nixon is worthwhile.

You really are looking to punish yourself
Not saying its a bad film but no real fireworks either & it was adapted from a play.

Watched Talladega Nights last night. One of Will Ferrells better films. The 'invisible fire' is worth watching alone.

'Tis the season of Oscar worthies. I feel bound to dutifully see them while they're on the big screen. I love political dramas like West Wing and the film JFK or All the President's Men, for example so I reckon I'd love F/N. Doubt looks good as well, I like Amy Adams, she put in one of my favourite screen performances in Junebug.

Not long back from the Friday the 13th remake.

On the one hand it's what you'd expect, unstoppable killing machine hacks and slashes his way through a bunch of teens while they drink, do drugs and have sex.

On the other hand, it's too predictable, you see the kills coming far too easily. The best kill is far to early in the film, almost none of the victims are remotely likeable - I was nearly cheering for Jason at one point! - but what's worst IMO (and I acknowledge this is a strange comment to make) is that Jason spends far too much time on screen. He needs to be just off screen, he's much more terrifying as a breaking branch in the background, playing on your imagination than a bludgeoning machete-wielding hulk

Hotel Rwanda not as good as the hype. Harrowing story but film seems to be by the numbers.

Saw Slumdog millionare and actually enjoyed it. Dont know why but i expected it to be a cheesey feel good film but its actually quite gritty

Somers town nice little film some very funny bits.

The interview Ok hard to watch in places but its quite short which is good seeing as there is only really 2 people on screen all the way through. Steve Bushemi i allways enjoy and senena miller is a ride.

Re-watched Big Fish on Saturday night. I think it's a brilliant film. My favourite Burton one.

I saw Burn After Reading last night. Good movie, good cast.

I didn't find the humour funny in Burn after Reading, but that actor who played the CIA boss had me going.

Revolutionary Road for me, is the most outstanding film I've seen in months.
A masterpiece adaptation of a brilliant book.
Outstanding cast, acting, script, delivery of the lines, scenes and the slow burn to intense emotional eruption. The only person who knows what's going on, is the brilliantly acted supposedly mad son, everybody else is in cloud cuckoo land.
It's a classic now and will still be a classic in 50 years time.

Saw Vicky Christina Barcelone the other night and while it wasn't brilliant, it made a nice change after earnest worthiness of The Reader and Revolutionary Road (sorry geysir!). I can see why Barcelone is in the title of the film along with Vicky and Christina as it is just as important a character and looks wonderful. It's light and flowing and definately a good antidote to current weather/recession woes!

Taken, action scenes totally unbelievable but entertaining nonetheless. The daughter didnt seem that bothered with him, I would have left her. Liam Neeson to play James Bond? anyone?

watched a couple in the lweek , i'm not really movie person,

Rockinrolla - excellent , Ritchie's best since Snatch

Cass - Cass Pennant former head of west ham's ICF - based on hoologanism, there's lots of these around now , not a patch on the football factory but definetly worth a watch

The Crew- about a bunch of liverpool armed robbers - not bad , good story line,

I watched The Reader last night.
I broke my cardinal rule of avoiding any film with Ralph Fiennes in it (who is still flogging the one sterile dimension).
I'll have to read the book. The film is raising big issues over a 50 year timespan, but we only get fleeting examination of these issues. Spends too much time on the fornication as if there is something to learn in that area. People have sex, big féckin deal. But somehow aspects of that activity, ties into later events.
The real story is more about German society's attempt to come to grips with guilt before Germany opened up a wider debate about the holocaust and WW2.
The few scenes where the law professor discusses the trial with the law students are central but sparse.
We get glimpses of why our lawyer is ridden by huge deal of guilt.
Overall the film did not pull it off, too disjointed but still well worth a watch.

Rewatched adaptation last night. Quality in a messed up kind of way. Jonze + Kauffman = classic. If you enjoyed Being John Malkovich I'd recommend it. My brother would hate this kind of movie but I thought it was very smart.
