Hammers weigh up Fahey move
Barclays Premier League side West Ham United will monitor the form of St Patrick’s Athletic star Keith Fahey in this week’s FAI Ford Cup semi-final.
Saints take on newly-crowned eircom League of Ireland champions Bohemians in an eagerly awaited Dublin derby at Richmond Park. And Fahey – a leading contender for Player of the Year honours, despite Saints’ nearly-men status this season – is set to be watched by West Ham representatives, according to a report in Wednesday’s Irish Sun. The report claims that Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola was impressed by Fahey during the recent two-legged Uefa Cup defeat to Bundesliga big guns Hertha Berlin, when the former Republic of Ireland youth international was seen by many to outshine the Germans’ multi-million-euro talents.
Fahey, who turns 26 in January, has already had one stint in England: he was on the books of Arsenal and Aston Villa before returning to Ireland in 2003, making one appearance for Villa in an Intertoto Cup game against Lille OSC in 2002.
