The following is a statement from Sligo Rovers Football Club as an update and thank you in relation to the finances of the club. On Friday 7 March 2008, Sligo Rovers embarked on a season that carried plenty of potential. But with a large tax debt forward from the 2007 season and not having a full 16 members on the board, it was a year that would be incredibly difficult for The Bit O’Red With all this in mind the hard job of raising the much needed funds started. The club’s annual draw raised €35,000 and then our Liverpool Legends game was announced. The club makes it public that we are in real financial trouble and may not even complete the season. An even bigger push was put on fundraising and the Legends game raises €30,000. An extremely well supported syndicate draw comes up with €80,000. It was a true to testament to the dedication and loyalty of Sligo Rovers fans as the extraordinary fundraising effort was maintained for weeks on end. Not many clubs in Ireland could tell their supporters they are in so much trouble and manage to raise €145,000 from ordinary fans and a very hard working Board of Management. I know what you are all going to say. What are they looking for now? The season is ending in only five weeks with not one member of staff owed a cent. Last years tax bill has been paid in full and the chance of finishing in the top four or five is now a huge possibility. Should we let it go now? To finish the season creditor free we would need to raise €70,000 and this would leave us in a very strong position for the 2009 season.
Good positive story for a change. Well done Sligo fans, no time to stop now though

    So you're down 10 points ?

Does all this mean the current owners of Drogheda are no more ?
Are you effectively looking for new owners as and from today ?

I see today that the French Grand Prix has been cancelled. This is due to the main sponsor pulling out of the deal due to the impact of the credit crunch. It is exected that it is only the first of major sproting events to be affected!

I wonder what clubs have budgeted for sponsorship for next season?
Lets hope they have a serious review of these figures or next season could be worse than this............

Sponsorship for the clubs will be a lot harder to come by in the coming years. I know we've lost a couple of sponsors and will have to cut back accordingly. All the more danger for clubs who don't go in for proper budgeting.

Rumour has it (one of the lads on Dundalk FM's commentary team - Larry, or Moe) that the FAI will offer Sporting Franchise a place (in place of Cork/Drogheda?) in the Premier next season, anyone know anything more about this?

Surely the process if current Premier sides don't qualify for a Premier License and get relegated is that the highest non-promoted team in the First Division, with a Premier License, gets promoted.

Fingal are currently 4, so that would require other teams above them not to get Premier Licenses, or for the whole arrangement to be set aside.

Sounds like usual Dundalk conspiracies to me.

In Irish mail on Sunday that Drogs D-Day is on monday with Bohs D-Day this Friday.
Also all 22 league clubs are meeting in private this thursday in Sligo to discuss financial matters. I think its most likely going to be about the massive wages and the domino effect which has happened and how clubs can stop this from happening in the future.

That can only be a good thing. Wonder why it's in Sligo, though?

Not private any more is it?. Sounds like the behaviour of a cartel! Wait until caped crusader Stephen McGuinness hears of this..

"ORS" means others, I take it? Didn't hear about that before. Who's the others, if that's what it stands for?
