Ireland Women to meet Iceland, Ukraine or Russia in EURO 2009 play-offs


The Republic of Ireland Women’s team will be pitted against Iceland, Ukraine or Russia later this month in the EURO 2009 play-offs, the draw for which takes place on Monday at noon in Switzerland. Ireland booked their first-ever place in the play-offs on Wednesday following the completion of the six qualifying groups. Ireland will be at home on October 25 or 26 with the away assignment taking place on October 29 or 30.

That were confirmed as one of the ten teams in the draw when Switzerland were defeated by Germany, an hour before Ireland's final fixture in Sweden which they were unfortunate to lose 1-0 against one of the nations expected to challenge for the European title in Finland. Noel King’s Irish side concluded their campaign with 12 points to earn a third-placed finish. Italy, who came second behind group winners Sweden, are also in the play-offs but cannot meet the Irish in the deciders.
