    Reeling In The Years

Think this is a class show, best production I've seen on RTE, and hope they get round to doing one for this decade. No commentary spoiling it, just great choice of what was in the news at the time set to a great music soundtrack and of course, old school adverts. Really want to get it on DVD, how come RTE don't stock it?

For a similar reason it took 20 years to release a Live Aid DVD.
    From Wiki:

RTÉ has said that, because of the number of clips from external companies used in the series, it would be infeasible to release it on VHS or DVD. It claims that securing "video clearance" for each clip and song would make any release prohibitively expensive.
A great program though. Doing one for this decade might lose some of the effect, unless they wait a few years.

If they did it as a box set, it'd be one of their biggest sellers for sure. Of course i forgot about the news clips, they'd wouldnt have much rights on those ones.

You've been able to get the Rock N Roll years (what Reeling in the Years is basically a rip off of) from the BBC going back to pre-DVD days (I have the video from the year I was born somewhere). And they also have coverage from other organisations like ITN and Pathe if you look at the credits.

Presumably though the BBC sales would be enough to cover costs, while the RTE sales are obviously miniscule in comparison

    Great show indeed.

Great show, theres nobody giving their "expert opinion" on events. It just shows the events and lets you watch. On their website they say something like they cant release DVDs of it as it would be too hard and dear to secure all the footage rights.Class show though.

I feel the BBC presentation was always very good, plus the long list of News Agencies they credit for contributions.

While the BBC prodution suffers the same fate. The clips chosen are editoralised and modern events/personalities may be chosen in an previous occasion for comparision. So the 'years' compilation changes over a period of time.
I remember watching it years ago and thinking 'It's just RTE pomoting themselves and their old shows'.

But that is a good point about the "expert opinions". If it was made today there would be a load of no-mark talking heads, reminiscing about something that happened when they were three, but they somehow still describe the event in every detail. They ruin every clip/top 100 show with these people, some of whom only seem famous for being a talking head, and nothing else.

That bit may be true, but I find it's part of the attraction. I loved the old school RTE presentation, wonky graphics, cardboard newsrooms and studios, fuzzy outside broadcasts, old school newsreaders (Don Cockburn and the likes), great adverts of that time... It brings back great memories for me anyway.

This is great by the way, from 1985 sometime..

Best way to get Reeling in the Years is the slow way - record them one by one off the telly. I think I'm about half the way there.

It originally came out in the late 90s. They did the 80s and the 70s, and then in 2000 or 2001 released the 90s. It was grand because you were still going a few years back. The newer ones felt a bit silly, but they're very good now. They did the 60s a couple of years later, and I'd assume the 00s will be out around 2011 or so. Looking forward to it.

Yes, class programme ok. Really enjoy them but nostalgia isn't what it used to be
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

I guess they will just do the 80s first and see what sales are like and then release others in time.Although if it took them this long just to clear Music Rights for one Decade it will take alot longer for them all to be out.Still good its coming out though.

The 80's show was first aired in the Autumn of 1999. The 90's show followed the following Autumn. Other decades were released some years later.

Great show, only drawback being the eerie fixation with terrorist outrages, something handled a lot better in the 90's episodes.

    "The 150 minute compilation..."

So it won't be the full series. Bit more than half of it, in fact. I'll still be setting the video recorder so!

I've downloaded the whole series from rapidshare a while back.
"Jacques Santini...will be greeted in every dugout of the country by "one-nil, one-nil" - Clive Tyldsley, 89th minute of France-England June 13, 2004.
"Ooooohhhh Nooooooo" Bobby Robson 91st minute.

    Just watched it.

2 75 minute DVD's, with roughly 15 minutes from each year. Even though it's 90% domestic footage, the order of each clip is re-arranged from the tv version, and the songs are too. Some songs are left in, some are taken out altogether. There's a lot of editing done.

In 1981, the roughest year to view, Stardust opens the chapter, while the H-Block stuff is shortened but put together as one sequence early on, instead of the different pieces on the tv version. Unfortunately, Enniskillen features on the 1987 chapter, while Scotland's win in Bulgaria is taken out.

Overall, considering there is very little coverage of events outside here/NI for obvious reasons, a good production.
