In fairness, I'm from Mayo and have no affinity with Sligo Rovers or Galway United. I do support Castlebar Celtic because I grew up within 100metres of the ground and played with them for years. But you wouldn't get many people outside of town to support them. They'll want them to do well but not won't travel to watch them play. Anyway this is all a bit off topic, I think eirebhoy put it well.
A lot of people start supporting United, Liverpool etc when they are 10 years old and there brothers, fathers supported them. I wasn't even aware LOI existed at that age. Thankfully I grew out of it and hopefully it'll get better as LOI gets more coverage. Do you really want those diehard Liverpool and United fans supporting your local club anyway? They all seem like tossers.

Id say a lot, I know for sure even more support celtic(their own celtic as well as glasgow celtic ), but when it comes to the cruch they support THEIR LOCAL SOCCER club. Point being as Ive pointed out to so many LOI fans(most who seem to be supporters of Dublin clubs, for some reason?!) we do support our local clubs, unfortunately for you our local clubs are generally junior clubs, not LOI clubs some 45 miles away......not a ten minute bus ride on the 78a or the 19a....
I have no problem with people following clubs in other countries. However, in the unlikely scenario where a LOI team were drawn against a big English team/Celtic in a European cup group/knockout game, unfortunately I believe the vast majority of that English/Celtic teams Irish fans would support the English team/Celtic as opposed to the LOI team. It would be embarrassing really, we potentially have a home game for the LOI team where most of the fans present supported the away team.

It happened in 1998 for Pats v Celtic. One of the low points of my footballing life was hearing an Irish celtic fan telling our Scottish striker Ian Gilzean to "**** off vback to Britain" (as he spoke with a bit of a cockney accent having lived there most of his life)

I cant beleive it was that long ago, when celtic came back and won 2 - 0 was it?! Didn't realise I was following LOI that long

Sorry Paul I just spoke to thr Chairman of West United who I work with and he knows how many people came to watch the game as both side got 25% share of the gate money and 50% to the Galway FA . West United play in green and white hoops so that's why so many Celtic shirts . The home side had around 250 to 300 fans while the away side had 350 to 400 fans I don't want to talk about money but €10 to get in so it was easy to see how many turned up . One last thing West United are one of the best area's in town to follow Galway United as so many players in the past has turned out for the club .

    Facts Paul not fiction .............................

Sorry, I just checked and I gave the total, fair point. I was only messing about Galway United supporters. Still though 400 of a population of around 1500 - 2k isn't bad, the general point still stands re:local club!

    *sigh*

Thats not the argument. The argument is whether he's better than some of those selected.

Next year he's likely to be playing at a higher level than some of those lads too, so that arguement can't be used.

And for the record I've consistently said he should be in the squad if everyone was fit and available

How would you define international class?

All definitely better than Fahey at the moment. There's a couple more that probably would be as well. I think Fahey's a good bit away from the squad at the moment.

Yes seen him loads of times before he went back to England and he is a good player but not international class. Hope i am wrong like you really do.

Terrific argument. You've seemed to have won everyone over with that one.

    You've got no fans.

McCann's not better than Fahey. Saw him play against Birmingham and he was certainly not "international class". TV viewings gave me similar impression

Obviously has more scope to improve
