Dunno, I just think - not wishing to tell people what to do - if you have a prob with the Echo, keep it with the Echo.

Noel has done a lot of good stuff over the years, but guys are just obsessed with any error he may make/opinion they don't concur with. Plus, he was asked to contribute this article by a club member.

And b4 yez all jump down my throat here, I'm not defending him so save all your examples of what he wrote/said on BRB etc etc. I'm merely offering an opinion here and have no intention of spending my day toing and froing with it. Thank you, very kindly.

There's a wagon load of good stuff in the programme, the standard is higher than the club has ever produced b4 (sez he, humbly) yet, typically, a perceived negative in the list above is imediately jumped on without the piece even being read.

Ach, why am I even bothering?

Talking about feeding the mouth that bites you......

    Just a question Donie,

Who has the editorial rights on City Edition? The Editor or the Club or is the Editor doing the Clubs bidding....??

Thats grand if ye use Echo photos...no problem with that....I have no problem with the Echo Photographers...Think they're great ...

oh by the way, I will still prob buy the Edition(supporting the club, dont you know ), Just letting my feelings be known on that poor excuse for a Journo.....
A lot of City fans are well píssed off with him and I was trying to point out that by having him in it, will only discourage rather than encourage people to buy it.

Depends by what you mean as editorial rights, I suppose. Here's how it works: we compile and edit the programme on behalf of the club. The club allows us free range as regards the content, presentation etc. They do require that certain info goes in, which they give us on a per-issue basis: such as the Golf Classic, any new safety arrangements, Club Shop, the upcoming Lotto changes, chairman's piece, manager's piece, Noelle's piece, commercial manager's piece etc etc. Basically, whatever they want to put in, it goes in. This probably makes up 15-20% of total content. My rule of thumb on this is simple - it's their publication, they are paying for it at the end of the day.

A club officer, as I understand it, asked Noel Spillane to write an article as a tie-in to the lunch/half-time presentations being made to honour the Hibs & Waterford 1972 teams. Personally, I have invited many journalists to contribute to the programme - some have obliged, others promised, others haven't replied.

We have a big production this season but we have gathered an excellent team of contributors and, I think, a very good balance in the content. That's my honest opinion. I think we have something to be proud of, and I'd say that if I was just buying it every time.

On the other side of editorial rights: I rejected an Echo journalist's article earlier this season. It was a decision I made - I received no flak from the club over it. It was a particularly brutal piece, IMO...and I wouldn't use it.

Sorry if I butted in strongly in my original post, NorthoftheLee - I just didn't want this developing into a 'let's boycott the programme' thread over something that, IMO, has nothing to do with the programme.

Glad to hear you'll still be getting the programme and I hope you enjoy it.

    rgds,

    concerned customer....

I have never doubted the quality of the programme, i thinks its very good.......you should be proud.....

Have to disagree..he has an article in the programme, by not buying it, you are making your feelings known to the programme editors that you do not appreciate this man writing in the programme.

as i have made my objections known to you, then my grievences have been aired...

Perhaps, I didn't make myself clear last time: the club requested he contribute the article.

I may be a wee bit confused here, but are you saying that you would boycott something without seeing it first? He has, for instance, an excellent piece in the Echo this evening on the '72 Hibs-Waterford clashes. I don't like everything he writes - I don't always like everything I write...

I think the Spillane stuff here, much like everything else, has gone OTT. We are none of us writing Pulitzer material. Give the man a break...

Maybe they did, but the buck stops with the Editor....He had free range not to publish it

I have boycotted the Echo since the "RACISTS" article...and will continue to do so until that man has ceased being given the Cork City correspondent duties.

There is nothing OTT about exercising your right as a consumer to boycott the purchasing of any product if you are not happy with any element of the said product. Its called consumer choice.

I choose not to buy the Echo because I am unhappy at some of the recent articles and the sometimes substandard coverage given to it's local football club. It was the only reason I bought the rag in the first place.

Thats the end of my contribution to this thread....I have made known my feelings regarding the said journo and his contribution to the programme...I dont intend to get into a consumer rights debate

Fair enough, NorthoftheLee, trust me I'm happy to call it a day on this too.

The Editor and the Buck. Hmmm, how difficult can this be; if the club wants it in then it goes in. The club asked, and it's in.

If you have a problem with his 'Racist' article, fine. But I would draw your attention to the fact that journos don't write the headlines on their articles...

The content mayhave been off quilter, that's NS territory ok as he wrote it, and for him to stand over. On the night, I never saw the handball from where I was. I initially assumed the booing of Mbabazi WAS because he was black(no one else was being booed). It was a surprise to me, but speaking to someone at full time the situation was explained.

Others here have suggested (and sent) complaints etc to the Echo/Echo Sports Editor. I can only add that if you are unhappy that is the course, albeit a futile one it would seem, to take.

It's a bit unfair of you to expect me to adopt an editorial stance over something you have a grievance with.

His piece in the programme tonight is simply to mention and honour players from Cork Hibs and Waterford 30 years ago. Personally, I have no problem whatsoever with that. In fact, I welcome it as a gesture to two very fine teams. If you have a problem with THAT, after reading it, I'll gladly take your genuine cribs on board.

    Till then, enjoy the game.

Just to add another tuppence worth ( ).
The program is an excelllent publication and worth buying for itself, without the added incentive of contributing to the City coffers.
Being one of those who object most, if not the most, to Spillanes low standards, I would not refuse to buy the program because he has an articles published in it. However, I might ask if he is the right person to actually write this article?
Surely Billy George would have been the man to write about those halcyon days? He would have covered those games as a soccer correspondent and would still presumably have his own contemporaneous notes from those games ?
Spillane's coverage of Cork football, by his own admission, began well after that great era.

On another point though, it will be fantastic to see those players again. I was a star struck young boy at the time of those 2 amazing games, was brought to both of them, and well remember being in tears at the end of the league decider. I felt especially betrayed as a relative of mine was one of the Waterford scorers !
(He made it up to me the following year by scoring the winner against $hels in the cup final replay)
It was all repaired the following Sunday however, when I also remember quite clearly getting sick on the train home, I was so full of chocolate, crisps and fanta !
Jerry Finnegan used to deliver the coal to our house and I used to be so awestruck that I could never talk to him.
My favourite player of them all was John Lawson though, if City had him playing in our present team, we'd win the league and cup double no problem !

Have to agree with ya Patsh, Billy George is the man for the job. IMHO He is the only one in the Echo/Examiner group who writes intelligently on LOI football.
On Jerry Finnegan I remember one time in the Lodge Jerry wasn't having a great game and this wit shouted at him "Get out of it Finnegan ! The only time I want to see ya is when youre delivering me coal ! John Lawson still lives in Cork and bar the grey hair looks as fit as when he played with Hibs. From a dead ball around the penalty area he was lethal. Up there with Beckham or anyone else you could mention. Maybe he could give Georgie a few lessons with the free kicks ?
