    FAI

The death has occurred in the Mater Hospital, Dublin, of the FAI’s Senior Coach Educator and manager of the Irish Universities men’s team, Noel O’Reilly. Aged 60, he was one of the most respected figures in Irish football and a valuable member of the FAI staff at Abbotstown.
    Only 60.

    Sad news.

Many fond memories of Noel and he was always there for me when I started out at this journalism lark.

Most of our discussions were off the record but he never failed to answer a call or get back if he was busy.

An absolute gentleman in every way and many of our current stars have Noel to thank for his advice, praise, criticism but above all his neverending encouragement.

Someone somewhere is currently being entertained by Noel and his guitar.

They probably heard that the sisiter-in-law of the Sunderland groundskeeper has a migrane and they are seeing how that develops first.

RIP - not that 99% of the "soccer-mad" Irish public and journailsts will notice or care...

His contribution to my club and to Irish football generally should never be underestimated. A giant of a little man.

RIP Noel and deepest sympathies to Rose.

Out having a few pints with a couple of old football mates from 25 years ago earlier when the news came through, in a second it took us all back to Fairview Park where his passion and coaching brilliance first came to notice. A great coach but an even greater man. RIP Noel. A sad sad day.

That is the essence of the man there.

Unfortunately his passing will be merely a footnote in another weekend of publicity driven media hype. Great fella, big loss.
