Internet clampdown as rape claim football stars named

THE names of eight top English footballers linked with the alleged gang rape of a teenager were still widely available on the internet last night despite attempts to close down the websites.

Some soccer website message boards and chatrooms were closed, but others continued to speculate on which high-profile Premiership stars were at the centre of the police investigation.

Office workers who have sent e-mails speculating about the identities of the footballers were warned last night that they could face libel action. In an unprecedented move, solicitors representing players are targeting individuals in an attempt to silence cyber-gossip.

    What websites would they be?

Next they'll be sending solicitors into pubs to stop people talking about it.

They can't control what's said on the Internet - that's the point of the Internet. The players shouldn't be named unless there is enough evidence to charge them. Regardless their names will come out eventuall because people know who they are and they will want to plead their innocence or whatever. Trying to hold website owners at ransom for what other people are saying is ridulous but unfortunately libel happens...

It's not the internet's fault, or the service providers, or the talk boards that we all know or think we know the players' identities. It's whoever leaked the names in the first place. And it may have been many different people.

But newish technology isn't really that significant. There have been media around capable of spreading rumour quickly to a huge audience since the 18th century.

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.
