England?? What a joke after the last time they were here and some of their fans tried to tear the place down.

Our first ever home international was against Italy. They would have been ideal except they're in our group but that would be history by the time the stadium is opened so I'd go for Italy, especially if Trap is still the manager then.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

I think it was Denmark in 1993.

    Italy get my vote too.

the thing about italy is, by the time the stadium opens, we'll have played them twice in the previous 14 months or so, including a home game the previous october. I'd prefer to play someone we don't have such a strong recent history with

I'd be fine with England playing so long as the security's up to scratch. But my vote would be Holland, some great games in the past and they know how to create an atmosphere.

England should have been the last match in the old Lansdowne.

FAI could have saved a lot of money on the demolition work.
I think I should the parachute, because I'm great.

In fact, I think I should get both parachutes, in case one doesn't work.

Probably the best argument for the Tans so far. Still won't get my vote though.

[QUOTE=back of the net;1025529]how do u feel we have a connection with the germans based on them beating england ??? - if that was the case we would have a connection with every nation that beats england

That connection sounds good to me, always felt a good connection with the lovely portuguese people meself over the last few years and tournaments.
Its crazy to see people be what society wants them to be but not me.

I'd like to see a United Ireland squad play against someone the likes of Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy, or Spain.

Do you mean Italy - first official International in Turin and also our first ever home game.

There is an argument that our 1924 Olympics games v Bulgaria and Holland should now be recognized as full Internationals. the FAI certainly did until they reclassified them in the 1960's and I believe both our opponents still do.

Very astute.... but it ****es me off people using "we" for English teams,
really if you're not English, don't live in England, you're not in the squad, not even a professional footballer and you're still using "we" to describe a team that you've probably never seen play except on telly...you're a Tosser...

It might put it into perspective for people that English club teams are not "OUR" teams.. we have our own league and there's a league of Ireland club within 50kms of almost any point in the country..... (This republic of ours)

Let's support our country and our league... there's nothing wrong with keeping up with English sides or going to the odd games... but they're not fundamentally "our" teams....and we need to realise this, playing against England and all the needle it entails... might make one person think.. and that enough for me... (I'm an intellectual don't you know...)

    Therefore if people use WE for english teams... I have the same right to say;
"I really hope that the yanks or Israelis don't bomb our nuclear processing plant in Isfahan here in the Islamic Republic of Iran... We're perfectly entitled to our Nuclear programme under IAEA rules..."
