Ah in fairness the only reason Bohs fans are mentioning Bate is on the back of Bate's current European adventure. But in counterbalance to that beating a Bundesliga side 1-0 in their own patch is defo one to brag about.

Its a pity that alot of the (older) good reults already mentioned in this thread aren't immortalised on tape.

I'm very surprised that City didnt make the list a few times for the games against Bayern Munich, Galatasaray, our hammering of Malmo in the Intertoto a few years ago, then the NEC Njimegen game after that, Djurgardens (when City reached the First Round Proper of UEFA Cup) to name but a few...
low lie the fields of Bishopstown......

Derry's 4 nil against Benfica was nowhere near as bad as the result against Apoel Nicosia in 2003. Benfica got to the final that year as mentioned above.

Longford win that competition hands down anyway.

I'm offended that you chose to reverse the fixture on a number of the matches. Is this winding up?

Athlone Town scored four goals in the European Cup first round in 1983 (2-3. 2-8).
An avalanche of goals considering what was to follow in the barren mid- and late- eighties for other LoI representatives.

I hope I am never petty enough to criticise a team in Europe. Disappointed maybe but wouldn't hold a performance against their fans.
Poor performance has led to perjorative language been used at LoI games in the past, this attitude and behaviour isn't acceptable to me.

What part of "don't be offended" is tricky?

It's clearly for discussion purposes only, not to have digs.

Just a couple of notable events in this game

Anthony "Jelly" Keenan made his Athlone Town debut in the first leg.

Derek Carroll missed a penalty for Athlone Town in the home leg. No one every remembers that one only the Minnock miss against Milan.

The man himself Roddy Collins who was just newly signed by Athlone was very impressive in both legs of this game. He scored in both the home and away legs.

In the second leg Athlone got the worst possible start when they went one behind after 50 seconds.

Aye, I even tried to wind myself up by suggesting Derry were beat 4-0 at home.

I just put up teams' (that are relevant today) worst results in Europe. It just so happens that UCD's "worst" result was 1-0. Had it been a worst performances list UCD wouldn't have been on it, nor a few others. I should have made it clearer that it was results not necessarily performances my list referred to.

In terms of Pats results. I'd rate the win over Elfsborg as our best. Much better than the draw in Celtic Park, which was ultimately worthless. Winning ties is just so much more fun. I'd even rate beating Ghent 3-1 at Richmond in the Inter toto and going out on away goals as better than the Celtic result.

As for Z****u. Yeah, that's still a horrible embarressment. Even almost a decade later I can still remember the numb feeling coming out of Richmond Park that night. As low as I've ever felt(or hope ever to feel) after a game of football.
Out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected.

Slightly off topic, did any other club play an away leg in a neutral country apart from us v Linfield in 1979 (match was played in Holland, which we won 2-0, 3-1 on agg) + Shels* v Rangers in Tranmere's ground in 96/97*

    * possibly the worst collapse in a game, they were 3-0 up I think.
#DundalkFC - First Irish club to win an away game in Europe (1963), only Irish club to win a game / points in Europa League Group Stage (2016).

Yes, The City of the Clubs benefitted the mostest from decisions to take the match away from the originally intended venue.

    Cup-Winners-Cup 1972-1973 match
    Pezoporikos (2-6) Cork Hibs 1-2 1-4

Both matches were played in Cork. I don't have the exact details. Pezoporikos later merged with another club to form AEK Larnaca.

Due to the bit of bother with 'the Generals' overthrowing a legimate Greek Government and serious Unification movement in Cyprus a liberating Turkish Army arrived in Cyprus in 1974. It was deemed difficult to organise matches and travel so Cypriot clubs lost out.
    European Cup 1st Round 1974 -1975
    Omonia - Cork Celtic (c) (c)

Cork Celtic got to play in Yerevan, Russia after that.

In my lifetime(well at least what I can remember), I'd have to say its hard to look past Bohs with Kaiserslautern and Aberdeen, but moreso Shels with Split and Deportivo, although I'm probably a bit biased.

So where were you two years ago when Derry beat two times uefa cup winners IFK Gothenborg 1-0 home and away?

Beat the Scotish dream team Gretna away(they were at the time) 5-1 and were unlucky in the home 0-0 with PSG!

I suppose you must have a selective memory.
So if you think Bohs are big read this. http://www.astronomy.ie/perpespective.html

Shelbourne's aggregate defeat of Belenenses in 1964. (Featured on MNS recently). Belenenses were a top team at the time, in what was a very strong Portugese league. (Benfica were one of Europe's dominant clubs). Winning one leg is all very well, but winning the aggregate tie is a much clearer indication of a team's ability and achievement. Bohs defeat of Aberdeen is much more impressive than their eventual loss to Kaiserslautern. Derry's defeat of Gothenberg is more impressive than Drogs' draw in Kiev. (Although if they had won and knocked Kiev out it would have been the greatest ever achievement by an Irish club).
