Tbh their selection of games was on the basis of how good the opposition was.
Take the Rovers game. no 1. This was chosen as valencia where one of the top teams in european football. say if you compare that to Drogs against Kiev. They are no Valencia of the day.
i know the derry Gretna game made no 20 for the fact it was Gretna they beat. Some team beat a top german side 1-0 in germany. this result was excluded because they got hammered 6-0 in the first.
Limerick Real Madrid was there and i think was the only defeat by an irish side included

Didnt Derry put up a good show to Benfica many years ago, even though they lost 2-1, weren't Benfica euro cup holders at that time?

What about Derry hammering Gretna in Fir Park?

It seems to be favouring Dundalk in a huge way having 3 in the Top 10....bit bias like!

You can't include moral victories against big teams when no chance of progressing.

Derry's away game V Gretna also made the top 20. Maybe it may seem a bit bias having Dundalk as 3 in top 10, but remember one thing, we played in europe every year bar one from 76- 82 (two rounds twice, 3 rounds once) and only lost one home game (v Liverpool in 82) - so the pedigre was there

Also as i said previously, this is only one persons view, and it was in a dundalk programme (which incidently gave Rovers no 1 spot)

On noticable absence was Waterford from the top 20. they had a great team in late 60`s/early 70`s, must have been some good results in europe there ?
#DundalkFC - First Irish club to win an away game in Europe (1963), only Irish club to win a game / points in Europa League Group Stage (2016).

the LOI results in recent years have been impressive alright - are we due another round of "domestic soccer is dead" media hype soon?

In the name of Oirish journalists who are so passionate about the game of course...

Hhmmm am surprised with the no.1 selection but still think the Rovers almost knocking out eventual winner Bayern Munich only for Gerd Muller to grab the winner with minutes to go should be top! This was a team containing several world class stars of the time.

The Kaiserslautern side Bohs beat away made it all the way to the semi-finals that season - eventually losing to the Spanish side Alaves - who were then beaten by Liverpool in the Final.

Also significant for being the first time a LoI side had won two away legs in Europe in the same campaign.

Should have been higher up the list imo.

Benfica went on to lose the in the final of the European cup (CL nowadays) on pens the year they beat us 2-1. A very very dodgy goal that won it for them as well.
So if you think Bohs are big read this. http://www.astronomy.ie/perpespective.html

I have to ask. What is a dead tie, when a LoI club is playing in a UEFA-sponsored tournament, ever?
( I understand dead rubbers in Davis Cup Tennis. I don't appreciate any similarity.)

Not for the last time a very, very dodgy decision from the Brandywell.
This was the first LOI club match that was broadcast live in a European competition. Ensured capacity crowd helped make up the mind of everyone (Incl. match officials)

It was normal to believe an announcement to cover a game live would affect match ticket sales. So it wasn't done for precious Europe. 'Don't you understand we are in Europe...," is a well used argument within Irish football.

BTW, I fear some posters may get/continue to be anti-RTE.
At the time, RTE were showing Cup-Winners-Cup finals when both ITV and the BBC had finished/stopped broadcasting European Cup Finals, because BBC and ITV were a little jaded only showing non-English clubs from 1985. But not the pioneers at RTE.

you asking everyone to discard the Pats v. Zimbru tie then?

I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.

My favourite was Droghedas draw in Kiev.Unbelievable experience over there at the game.My greatest moments as a drogs fan.Other results which stick out are derrys two wins over gothenburg and and shels beating Split.I'm too young to remember the results from the 60s/70s

When the tie is effectively over. Pats drew 0-0 with an excellent Dinamo Bucharest side but as we had lost the first leg 4-0 it shouldn't count. Similarly Bohs 1-0 victory in Germany isn't as worthy as their victory in Aberdeen, despite the lesser quality opponent

Yeah, we annihilated them though, which is probably the point.

Did you watch the Kaiserslautern game? Like Drogheda in Kiev, Bohs had the chance to got 2 up, and also a goal dis-allowed which was a borderline offisde call.
